Iran Worried U.S. Might Be Building 8,500th Nuclear Weapon

Last edited Mon Mar 12, 2012, 03:14 PM - Edit history (1)

TEHRAN—Amidst mounting geopolitical tensions, Iranian officials said Wednesday they were increasingly concerned about the United States of America's uranium-enrichment program, fearing the Western nation may soon be capable of producing its 8,500th nuclear weapon.

"Our intelligence estimates indicate that, if it is allowed to progress with its aggressive nuclear program, the United States may soon possess its 8,500th atomic weapon capable of reaching Iran," said Iranian foreign minister Ali Akbar Salehi, adding that Americans have the fuel, the facilities, and "everything they need" to manufacture even more weapons-grade fissile material.

"Obviously, the prospect of this happening is very distressing to Iran and all countries like Iran. After all, the United States is a volatile nation that's proven it needs little provocation to attack anyone anywhere in the world whom it perceives to be a threat."

Iranian intelligence experts also warned of the very real, and very frightening, possibility of the U.S. providing weapons and resources to a rogue third-party state such as Israel.

just a handful of our nukes could turn their country into a glass parking lot. So in the long run whats the difference between 10 or 8500?

They could counter Bush with Ahmadinejad, but that's as crazy as they could go. Santorum is way crazier than Bush.

I take the threat of Iran very seriously and this precise reporting that you posted calls for, nay..., DEMANDS that we bomb them into radioactive slag!

This one has to be in the top five great articles along with Baby Bush's inaugural address that eerily predicted EVERYTHING he would do.

I can't remember what the other three are.

our nuclear arsenal along with Russia (SORT treaty). Current deployed warheads is 1,968. If we are reducing the number of warheads why would we be building new ones, esp since we signed a treaty with Russia to reduce the number of our warheads.

No amount of diplomatic efforts will deter Iran from building as many nukes as they can and then using them as quickly as possible to incinerate Israel.

After this happens of course, people will shed tears for Israel. But, that won't help the Isaelis much once they are dead.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_and_weapons_of_mass_destruction

In 2010, the Pentagon disclosed that the current size of its nuclear arsenal is a total of 5,113 warheads operationally deployed, kept in active reserve and held in inactive storage. The figure does not include the estimated 4,600 warheads that have been retired and scheduled for dismantlement. The number of operationally deployed strategic warheads stands at 1,968.[10]

Israel has some missile subs too, so no matter how successful a first strike on Israel would be, Israel could still do as much or more damage.

Also, as someone from the CFR recently pointed out, why would Iran nuke Israel when they support Palestinians politically?

Do people often commit genocide on their allies to make a broader political point?

I'm glad we have fewer warheads than the article said, but that is still more than enough to wipe any other country off the map, including Iran.
