How Sarah Palin Invented Bill Maher’s Liberal Excuse For Misogyny
But I watch knowing that Bill Maher represents a wide swath of liberal men who continue to have blind spot of which they are unaware. Friday night he explained his defense of the First Amendment (and thus Rush) by offering an apology to any women who may have been offended by his past remarks. Maher did note that he couldnt understand why any of us would be allying ourselves with Sarah Palin, which brings us to the issue at hand.
We most certainly are not allying ourselves with Sarah Palin, but that wont stop the world from doing so, and that is the problem.
Heres the deal. A long time ago, Bill Maher called Sarah Palin a tw@t and likened her to a slutty looking flight attendant. I am certainly no fan of Palin and her victimized reaction to Bill was a part of a long string of her playing the sexism card to get out of not knowing that Africa was a continent. I was damned embarrassed by her and sick of her dodging her inexperience and lack of knowledge with crocodile tears. Palin did try to stir up a Bill boycott, but it was ineffective, or impotent as she would say. I gather Americans were tired of her crying wolf and just didnt care. Also, the ugly truth is that what Bill said had a measure of truth to it, stemming from Palins own actions.

There is a confusion here and elsewhere that if you say something bad using an assortment of arbitrarily proscribed words about anyone who happens to be a woman (or in its broader extension, using those naughty words at all about anyone or anything) you are guilty of misogyny.
I disagree.
Palin acts like a dick. Only that word really doesn't do justice to the way she acts, but we have a problem here on this boad with all the words that are better. Palin is a public figure who goes out of her way to publicly go all nasty on her list of people she hates, and she does that while asserting her femininity in her gum snapping big hair in your face style. Throwing the nasty back at her is not misogyny, no matter which words you use. Are there limits? Sure. Maher didn't, in my opinion, cross any of them.

(11,304 posts)Especially her comments about men who write opinions about her that aren't kind but are true. None of the men in those columns used nasty words about her being a woman in any way. Yet I remember her questioning Mr Gross of Vantity Fair manness. I think Mr Gross was gay. Yet she has said that couple of times about men and no one said anything. I do not think Maher crossed a line because he is a comedian and she is in the public eye. On the other hand Ms Fluke is a private citizen going before congress talking about a very important issue and Limpy calls her a slut. Well I sure hope she sues him in court.

(2,161 posts)There is absolutely no First Amendment issue in the protests against Limbaugh. None.
There is no First Amendment right to have Geico, or anybody else, sponsor your talk show. When I contact Geico or McDonald's to ask that they withdraw their ads from RL, I am exercising my First Amendment rights. If Geico withdraws, they are making the best business decision for themselves.
The First Amendment is a constraint on government suppression of free speech. My contacts with advertisers is not a government action on any level.
Maher is a dumb tw@t.

(1,893 posts)He has always had a sneering contempt for women. Misogynistic slurs are not an occasional slip-up with him, they're a long-established pattern.
Remember this?

While he may not be as bad as the impossibly, immeasurably vile Rush Limbaugh, I find it very depressing that either one of these hate-spewers has a successful career.
