Hillary speaks out: "This is a new Cold War." Focus on Russian disinformation happening now
http://www.mercurynews.com/2017/10/06/hillary-clinton-san-francisco-stanford-book/Hillary Clinton singles out Facebook, Twitter and Google for enabling Russian agents
She called for the United States to take a hard line on Russian aggression, predicting that the Kremlin would continue its attempts to influence elections as soon as next year when dozens of congressional seats will be contested.
Their weapon of choice is not tanks or missiles, but lets not mince words: This is a new kind of Cold War and it is just getting started, the former secretary of state and Democratic presidential nominee told about 500 students at the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
She specifically called out Facebook, Twitter and Google for failing to do more to prevent Russia from influencing the election.
Facebook is the largest news platform in the world, and with that awesome responsibility they must accept accountability, she said. Later, she added, its time for Twitter to stop dragging its heels and live up to fact that its platform is being used as a tool for cyberwarfare.
Strong words.

(10,173 posts)...her words will be taken to mean that "Hillary wants a cold war" .. sour grapes, "hillary blaming everyone but herself" BS etc. That will be the Russian line which American dupes will parrot.
But she's correct,
......and Russia's interests align with the interests of American nutjobs on the far right.
sigh.

(1,399 posts)Secretary Clinton's remarks being "spun" as encouraging a new Cold War, it shouldn't have added in the Twitter feed from Chris Zappone whose website is called "Cold War Daily."
I have zero doubt about Russia's effort to influence the 2016 election. I also have zero doubt that Trump and/or surrogates like Cambridge Analytica colluded in that effort. I also have zero doubt that those efforts were a factor, though not the biggest factor, in the disastrous outcome.
On the other hand, to delegitimize disagreement through labeling, i.e., "[disagreement] will be the Russian line" and/or "which American DUPES will parrot," rather than debate its substance is a classic propaganda technique.

(10,173 posts)there's serious effort to downplay Russia's interference and throw cold water on this story from... as I said... the usual suspects.
There's nothing wrong with healthy skepticism, there's a whole lot wrong with denial.
there are a lot of confused American dupes out there.

(51,624 posts)This is cyber warfare and we have been attacked by a familiar enemy. In the past we had presidents who tried to fight the enemy. This war has our government in bed with him and is allowing it to continue. In fact, I think they are encouraging Putin to keep doing it in all of our future elections too. Why stop now when they have carte blanche? Why is the GOP allowing a foreign power to destroy us? MONEY!!!!!!!! Collusion is rampant in DC. Our country has been sold.

(6,916 posts)That's a Russian (divisive) talking point you're echoing there.
But I'm interested - explain what you mean?
Because right now the FBI and Mueller are pretty much the only things standing between us and autocracy.

(10,500 posts)I am not looking to echo Russian talking points. But I won't condone FBI corruption to rig the election for the GOP.

Its fair to say Comey affected the election. But it seems he got played by corruption in the FBI NY office, related to Giuliani. And Chaffetz illegally leaked Comes letter, removing the classified markings. Chaffetz should be in jail.
Note that Trump and the Russians say the same thing about Comey as you. You should reevaluate.
