The Resistance, Raising Big Money, Upends Liberal Politics

https://www.nytimes.com/by/kenneth-p-vogel

By KENNETH P. VOGEL
OCT. 7, 2017

WASHINGTON — It started as a scrappy grass-roots protest movement against President Trump, but now the so-called resistance is attracting six- and seven-figure checks from major liberal donors, posing an insurgent challenge to some of the left’s most venerable institutions — and the Democratic Party itself.

The jockeying between groups, donors and operatives for cash and turf is occurring mostly behind the scenes. But it has grown acrimonious at times, with upstarts complaining they are being boxed out by a liberal establishment that they say enables the sort of Democratic timidity that paved the way for the Trump presidency.

The tug of war — more than the between supporters of Hillary Clinton and Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont — foreshadows a once-in-a-generation reorganization of the American left that could dictate the tactics and ideology of the Democratic Party for years to come. If the newcomers prevail, they could pull the party further to the left, leading it to embrace policy positions like those advocated by Mr. Sanders

Indivisible's roots go back to Obama staffers. I am a Hillary supporter who is donating my own money to Indivisible efforts. The article itself says that Soros is a donator to some of these efforts.

I'm so sick of this bullshit.

Indivisible and other resistance groups are not working against the Democratic Party. There is no jockeying for cash or turf.

Interesting how none of these articles seem to be able to see this groundswell of interest as simply growing support and enthusiasm for making sure Democrats are successful.

I agree that Indivisible is NOT working against the party. I participate in the resistance via a local chapter. It is my opinion that it is time for those under 60 to take the reigns of the Democratic Party locally and nationally.

working with the party. They are becoming election judges, precinct committeemen, deputy registrars. Many are running for office. They are meeting and educating themselves.

It is very much time for those under sixty to take a more active role. I become discouraged when I go to meetings and see leadership that is all older people. Some of that is understandable, because retired people have more time for it. But I see some movement there. I say this as a sixty-nine-year-old woman.

We need to mentor the younger people. I do see this happening in some places. But they need to listen to us, too. This is a two-way street. They need to network, and understand how political power is developed.

I like Indivisible. Some of the other grassroots groups could learn from them.

I don't see anything being upended. This is a BS article.

Nevermind the fact that nobody will take Bernie seriously until he officially joins the party... And I don't mean join in January 2020, either...

Was a fair and balanced explanation of the turmoil going on right now in the Democratic party. Did not read it as divisive just a thorough display of both sides. Enlightening if nothing else.

We agree. The article was shared in the spirit of creating an atmosphere that favors the inevitable change that is needed to revitalize the party.

This writer & veteran is of a mind that perhaps one tactic or strategy, if you want to call this by either term, which might start to open a way for dialogue to change America from the course toward violent conflict, to a nation where we are actually listening & considering the others' points of view. Yes, I know, maybe pie in the sky, maybe one might say this one who is posting has donned the proverbial rosy coloured glasses. However, methinks this is worth a try. Let's not take away from other kinds of protests, but let us ALSO make our best attempts to open clear & sincere & mutually respectful channels of communication with the objective of decelerating or slowing down what seems to be a path toward violent conflict or even civil war.

I am hoping that maybe some of us can begin to make real conversations, not arguments, not finger-pointing or blaming, but real honest but RESPECTFUL dialogue so that we Americans can pull together as one Nation, undivided, with Liberty & Justice for all (ALL PEOPLES, NOT JUST SOME KIND OF PEOPLE OR COMMUNITIES.

With this in mind, I have begin talking on my own, making my best efforts to stay calm & focused, so that we as Americans, we in each community in the USA, allow ourselves all the chance to be UNITED in efforts to keep what is GOOD ABOUT AMERICA, WHAT IS RIGHT WITH OUR COUNTRY, AND TO RESOLVE OR CONFRONT WHAT NEEDS TO BE WORKED ON TO IMPROVE AS A PEOPLE & AS A NATION.

One of my latest efforts:

"Open Letter to the President of the United States of America, Mr. Donald Trump:

"Sunday, 8 October 2017

"Mr. President;

"Of course, sir, you have probably become aware of your low ratings. This is of course, for you and your agenda, not a good thing. I would also like to say, I am sorry for this development for ALL OF US, sir, although yes, it is not hidden that I have opposed the ways of the Republicans and Tea Party Conservatives, of doing things, & I disagree with what seem to be many of your statements or opinions. Certainly, I am not in favour of most of your domestic policies, and some of your foreign policies. Does this mean that I would fail to be loyal to either you as the POTUS or to America? Of course not. I am an American first & foremost. At least one of my ancestors fought against the British as a militia man in the Carolinas, according to my father's mother, Mary Allensworth Creighton (founder of the Galesburg Post & Knoxville Journal, or Knox County, Illinois). Also, my own mother, who was an immigrant, LEGALLY, did of her own volition study American Civics & became an American citizen, and ALWAYS VOTED, ALWAYS SERVED HER NEIGHBOURHOOD TO THE BEST OF HER ABILITY.

"Please, without this looking like I want to presume to advise you, sir, allow me to express myself in support of our great nation, the United States of America. May I suggest that you, sir, with an open mind, read & think with an open mind & heat, about holy scriptures such as the Bible, the Torah, the Buddhist writings, and even the Quran? I think you might be pleasantly surprised, and possibly moved to do things in a different and hopefully better way. And I think you might be pleasantly surprised that your ratings go up.

"I forgive what I have perceived as insults to my peoples, the peoples of my late mother, Maria Teresa Padilla de Creighton: the Latinos, the Mexicans, the Puerto Ricans, the Venezuelans… Need I go further? I also forgive you for what I perceive as policies & practices which are hurtful to the poor, the elderly, the races not so “lily white,” as some of you all might like. I forgive you for injuries & insults to the women of the world, although I am not a woman, I am the son of a woman, the brother of two women, the father of a young woman, the former husband of two fine women. And I am a fellow citizen & neighbor of women. Not that anyone empowers me to forgive you on their behalf, but I for one, NO LONGER CONSCIOUSLY HOLD ANY RESENTMENTS AGAINST YOU. SO AGAIN, IN JESUS NAME I FORGIVE YOU, DONALD TRUMP, SIR.

"NOW PLEASE, MR. PRESIDENT, CHANGE YOUR WAYS, SIR. THINK WELL ON THE CONSEQUENCES OF YOUR ACTIONS & WORDS. THINK ABOUT WHAT PEOPLE WILL THINK & DO WHEN THEY READ OR HEAR OR SEE YOU. Sir, you do lead by example. Please lead people toward what is good, not to what is evil. PLEASE ALWAYS, MR. PRESIDENT, DO THE RIGHT THING. ALWAYS DO THE RIGHT THING. ALWAYS.

"THANK YOU & GOD BLESS YOU, DONALD TRUMP, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA."

SINCERELY,

JOHN PETER CREIGHTON PADILLA SANTOSCOY

so I hope it works for Dems too. I have been resisting since Nov 8th and have many acquaintances in several different Indivisible groups. They are going about this in a very intelligent, well paced and serious manner and I applaud them. They are starting at the local level and started with no money but a lot of sheer dedication. We need more Dems like them as far as I am concerned.
