Bill Maher: Theres Always Money for Rich People
Its funny how whenever someone suggests the government spend money to help regular people by increasing social security benefits, for example, or providing free college tuition its always dismissed as a pipe dream. We just dont have the money, the smart people tell us. Yet nobody bats an eye when the Senate decides to increase military spending by $80 billion, which they recently did, even though thats nearly twice what it would cost to make every public college and university in the country tuition-free (the estimate for that is around $47 billion a year.)
Another example: Chris Christie offered Amazon up to $7 billion dollars in tax breaks to build a facility in Newark. Dont you think the people of New Jersey could use that $7 billion dollars? Will Amazon go broke if they dont get the tax breaks?
And yet in her new book, Hillary quotes a Facebook meme (probably from Russia) of Sanders saying, I think America should get a pony. Like hes some kind of nut. Yet everyone in America could get a pony if Amazon and the Pentagon werent hogging all the ponies.

(13,596 posts)ramped up exponentially in the 80's. It's gotten steadily worse ever since. As is CEO pay increasing 900% while a regular working guy got almost nothing. It wasn't just CEO's either. Other corporate officers got theirs too.
You have Wall Street scam artists with their high frequency trading. High tech front-running that is really supposed to be illegal, but no one stops it. They steal billions a fraction of a penny at a time.
I'd bet that what has basically been stolen from us would take care of much of the national debt if we could claw it all back somehow.

(321 posts)Bill Maher's not wrong about that. The rich have it all, and "trickle down" economics is a lie.

(1 post)With a base of 521.7 billion in 2016..
military budget is roughly 600 billion dollars.
Maybe if we used half of that on a tuition free America for 6 years we would be intelligent enough to know if and when things are true threat to our country.
People that assume they are intelligent like to prevent others from education.
After all educated people would be a threat, At least to their money.
