David Brooks column on abortion rights in today's NYT
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/01/opinion/abortion-democrats-compromise.htmlBrooks is infuriating! This column is outrageous. Read this and get ready to get mad as hell.
Roe v. Wade is stare decisus. Brooks should just stop making these bullshit analyses.
I hate it when so-called "reasonable" men on the right sound off like this.
Maybe his analysis is largely correct. I don't know. I just don't like it coming from a right wing male.
OK. Rant over...

(32,000 posts)We NEVER give up a woman's right to choose to the states!
Suppose Texas outlaws all abortions. Texas is a big state. Where does a woman go to get an abortion who lives in Texas? Probably not neighboring Oklahoma, Arkansas, or Kansas. Surely they will outlaw it, too. This puts an undue burden on women who must travel for hours to a clinic out of state, take time off work, come up with the money, etc. Brooks is absolutely WRONG on this! This is something we never give up on!
And I just HATE that phrase "abortion on demand". The Right just loves to use it, as if a woman stomps into a clinic, pounds her fist on the counter, and DEMANDS an abortion RIGHT NOW! Abortion is never easy, it never happens without a great amount of forethought, and it's never used for birth control, as the Right loves to tell us. Plus .... it's none of their goddam business.
And the nerve of a privileged old white guy to be telling us this. Infuriating! Brooks can go F himself.

(63,912 posts)an abortion. He agreed that it is a woman's right to choose. He said he "just wanted to discuss it but she adamantly refused." I told him it was also her right to not discuss it with him. As it turns out his wife was developing a deepening depression and she is now in a facility just to help her with daily routine activities. I told him that she might well have known this was slowly happening and felt she couldn't cope with another pregnancy. This is a sad situation all around. The woman is rejecting her two daughters, saying that they are the reason she is now so disabled.
He still mourns for the baby boy or girl he never had. Sad, sad, sad...

(16,785 posts)Those who oppose Abortion do so from a Religious point of view, not from a Legal or Constitutional one. Lawmakers and Anti-Abortion supporters believe that by passing laws that restrict abortion options, close down clinics, prohibit Contraception being covered in Health Insurance plans be it employer provided, etc., demand doctors give women incorrect information in which to intimidate them, and more.
This is mostly MALE lawmakers wanting to CONTROL and REGULATE women.

(32,000 posts)The most puzzling part is how they want to restrict contraceptive availability and sex education. Do they not realize that using contraception is one of the biggest abortion deterrents there is? Duh.

(30 posts)Brooks trying to pose as a reasonable person is one of the more painful spectacles of our diseased media culture. Everything he writes aims to make the semi-, pseudo-, and would-be-intellectual person feel comfortable with the Republican agenda.
Everyone here should read this:
