Kansas Scrambles To Change Rules After 6 Teens Enter Governor's Race
There are a lot of requirements if you want to vote in Kansas. You must be 18 years old. You need to show a photo ID at your polling place and show proof of U.S. citizenship when you register to vote. The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights says the state's voter ID laws are among the strictest in the nation.
But when it comes to the rules about who can run for state office? There are no rules.
"Under Kansas law, there is no law governing the qualifications for governor, not one," Bryan Caskey, director of elections at the Kansas secretary of state's office, told The Kansas City Star last year. "So there's seriously nothing on the books that lays out anything, no age, no residency, no experience. Nothing."

Anybody got a spare robot itching to be governor?

Good for the kids, though. If this isn't exactly being the kind of change they want, they at least are inspiring change.

(22,166 posts)In reality it is sad, because you would think that some of the older adults currently in government and their voters would use their life experiences to constructively deal with issues, in a positive manner, to benefit the majority of Americans.
I (and many of you in/outside of DU land) don't see this.
I'm talking about in particular, the GOP, the tRUMPettes, and their voters.
They call themselves a 'party'. No, I call them 'thugs' who gathered in a dark corner, and who wouldn't hesitate to throw/hurl that punch, brick, insult, or other hateful verbiage either at their opponents or others less fortunate, or have a belief other than theirs.
I call them 'thugs' because they scream, yell, and place blame at everyone else's feet, before they ever take a serious look at themselves first, before casting the first stone.
And what's ironic is that these are the ones whose wages haven't kept up with the cost of living. These are the ones stuck in a run down mobile home or shack in the middle of no where, where there are no jobs. These are the ones who are 'stuck' in some kind of limbo land, that seems to loop endlessly, around the racetrack to 'nowhere'. These are the ones who don't have any insurance, car or health. These are the ones who don't own any stock in any company (if they even know what a 'stock market' is) nor have any savings. These are the ones who receive the vast majority of welfare benefits, not the dreaded immigrants that they hate so much. These are the ones who hate the thought of gays/lesbians marrying, and yet, their divorce rates are the highest in the history of this country. These are the ones who vote in representatives that constantly vote to keep their minimum wages among the lowest in the country.
Need I go on?
Everyone needs a helping hand at some time in their lives, regardless of creed, color, beliefs, whatever. Instead of raising that hand to throw a punch or hurl a brick, raise it instead to a firm handshake, and join together to resolve the issues of the day, and make sure that all of us have a stake in this country, all of us.
This is what I wish for. Sorry for preaching.
