Every bad idea the GOP has, it learned in the 80s
Ever since he unveiled it on the campaign trail, President Trumps slogan Make America Great Again has prompted an obvious question: When exactly was this mythical period when America was last great?
At last we know the answer: the 1980s.
When it comes to aesthetics or general world outlook, the Greed Is Good decade was clearly Trumps formative period.
-snip-
But Trumps 80s ethos is more than merely cosmetic. It affects his, and his partys, most significant policies as well.
Take the GOP economic agenda, which has not been updated in (at least) 30 years.
Supply-siders still run the show, championing tax cuts as a growth elixir while conveniently ignoring their track record. All Trump and his cronies seem to remember is that there was this one time when Ronald Reagan cut taxes, and then
the economy grew.
They seem to have missed the role that monetary policy and the business cycle played in that mid-80s growth spurt. Not to mention all the other changes in tax rates over the past century, in both directions, that reveal no discernible relationship between tax levels and long-term growth.
Hence the GOPs big unfunded tax cut, on the promise well grow our way out of the expense. And when that doesnt happen, whom will Trump and Republicans blame for emptying the public purse?
Why, Reagans favorite villain: the welfare queen!

(15,805 posts)This self proclaimed expert huckster has taken us to outrageous debt numbers where no man ever dared to go before, or any 5th grader who can add and subtract. Now that his work is done and he has screwed up the US economy for decades to come, he's just going to walk away free and clear... and much richer than when he started.
Normally, you'd have to pay out big bucks to get someone to do the kind of damage that Ryan and his fellow Republicans have gotten away with, or at least hold their first born as hostage until it was too late to fix his mess.
Hold on to your skivvies, folks, the worst is yet to come.

(22,801 posts)I wondered if many of the GOP's worst ideas are actually hard core conservative ideas that go back centuries, if not millenia. The superiority of the wealthy, the laziness of the poor, the inferiority of women compared to men, belief in a wrathful and vengeful god, equating success with money and status, believing that good education should be reserved for the well-off, authoritarian government, a laissez faire economy, etc
