It just never occurred to me there would be Chinese passengers on the ship. I really should have guessed since at the time there were large Chinese and Japanese populations living in London. Glad this is being brought to light!

Certainly, our history books have been completely whitewashed in recent decades in response to conservatives and right-wing religious groups who want only religion and white male supremacy taught. But all that aside, the way we teach history results in very little understanding or remembrance of important concepts. Every history course is crammed full of facts and dates and people to memorize and then move on to the next event. History books can be a thousand pages long, even in middle school. Most states require American history in 8th grade and again in 10th grade—and much of the content is the same! I’ve always believed that history should be taught from a broader context, looking at major events from the perspectives of the politics of the day, the economic and business factors, the social movements, the beliefs of the leaders in charge, the influences from around the world, the need to exploit natural resources, cultural attitudes, and anything else that influences decisions that result in significant events. History should be taught each year, but with fewer topics and more in-depth coverage that invites critical analysis of the factors leading to major U.S. and world events. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately😀 , I’m not allowed to run the world!
