Japanese boat swept away a year ago by deadly tsunami spotted 4,703 miles away floating near Canada
A large fishing vessel swept away by the tsunami that devastated Japan last year has been spotted bobbing in the seas near British Columbia in western Canada.
The trawler is part of the 5 million tons of debris that were swept into the ocean in March 2011 when a magnitude-9.0 earthquake and tsunami struck Japan.
The 23ft wall of water struck the east coast of the island nation following a 9.0 earthquake, sweeping everything from cars to houses into the ocean leaving a wake of devastation.
More than a year later a Canadian military air patrol spotted the vessel - 4,703 miles away from where it was originally moored - floating towards the shore.

And here it comes. Could be an interesting time here on the west coast.

(42,239 posts)we've had live footage on tv news here in the UK. I'm guessing it will be shown over the pond later.

(115,681 posts)those who might be taking offense. My husband just brought Seattle Times in to show me this article there. The debris, it is coming. They were predicting high floating stuff showing up sometime this summer and looks like they were right.
Interesting how this ship made it all the way across the Pacific with no crew.

(42,239 posts)due to their political slant. General stuff like this is hardly likely to have a slant.
In general , as despite the seriousness of the situation ,would've been funny if they had a load of old VW Beetles over there. With doors and windows shut they're pretty much airtight. They'd bob along forever at sea.
Yes - where you are in the far north west I'm guessing other debris will be showing in the not too distant future. Maybe they could reopen Fort Worden as lookout post for it. If you wonder how I know about the Fort - I was out there dancing Xmas's 1995 & 2011

(115,681 posts)WA state parks is having financial issues and they are trying to figure out what to do with Ft Worden. There is a local group thingie that is talking about taking it over, a public park thing still, but are not sure what all will happen. It is the star park of WA state parks, makes money off concessions like Centrum, etc, and I'd hate to see it divided up into house lots.
Were you here for an event, a Centrum thing, performing or playing? PMing is ok if you'd rather not be public about it.
A body showed up on downtown beach recently, was concern it was from the tsunami already but turned out was a local woman who disappeared. Sad enough at that but glad it wasn't tsumani victims.

At this point, they have no idea what they are going to do with it!
Glad they've got some time to figure it out!

(10,642 posts)The man mentioned radiation, and there is probably still fuel on board.
Wouldn't surprised me at all if they eventually scuttle it, if the owners agree. I have no idea how this stuff works!
