Judge refuses to dismiss ex-Trump campaign chief's money laundering charge
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A federal judge on Friday dealt another blow to U.S. President Donald Trumps former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, refusing to dismiss a money laundering charge brought against him by Special Counsel Robert Mueller.
U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jacksons ruling was the latest setback for Manafort, whose charges stem from Muellers ongoing investigation into Russias role in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Jackson a week ago ordered Manafort jailed pending trial after Mueller filed fresh charges against him over alleged witness tampering while he was under house arrest.
Manafort is facing separate indictments in Washington and Virginia, with charges ranging from conspiring to launder money and failing to register as a foreign agent for the former pro-Russia Ukrainian government, to bank and tax fraud.

The money laundering charge is among the most serious Manafort faces, as it carries stiffer penalties and subjects him to asset forfeiture. Money laundering charges brought against a defendant must be pegged to an underlying criminal offense such as bribery or defrauding a bank.

(7,725 posts)not in my city. lightning fast for the "charged". Folks complete jail sentences in the time it took for any of these fuckers to really do hard time. The Circus trial will last all summer. God damn republicans.

(58,365 posts)but I would much rather Mueller take his time, do a methodical job, cross his t s and dot all his i s than rush the job and botch it.

(7,725 posts)This time...we can't afford a national tragedy. What if at the end dt doesn't go to jail? AND he's destroyed and re-arranged the govt? And our friends hate us? Love ya joey but...i just disagree. It's time to stop the momentum...cold. We can't afford this anymore.

(58,365 posts)Now more than ever, we have to trust in our justice system even if and especially because Trump doesn't.
A democratic republic may survive a corrupted President willing to trash the nation's most fundamental institutions for it can and will correct itself but if the people turn against our justice foundation and rule of law, the republic simply won't stand a chance and Trump or a future Trump clone will most assuredly win.

I guess my plan is to quit patty caking Mueller. The longer we just bend over and make excuses for going on 17 months of investigation, the longer he feels free to just take his time. He has a job and an army of assistants to do the work. How do you know it's not all a big ruse? How do you know someone hasn't gotten to him with the golden ticket? Here's a 100 million to drag your feet? How are you so sure all our eggs in one basket is a good idea my friend?
This never-ending patience w Mueller plays right into the hands of the gop. We have little proof Mr Mueller is going to deliver and a lot of proof he isn't. Ergo, another week has gone by. Local prosecutors get heat when they rick roll a situation...so should mueller.
Turn up the disapproval ratings on Mueller i suppose is the answer i can come up with.
Like i say, not my job. My job IS to dissent and speak up though. That's Patriotic, and what I'm doing Joseph.

(58,365 posts)in that period of time, indictments and convictions, I have no doubt more are on the way.
Mueller's history in regards to prosecuting organized crime and in turning down much more lucrative private practice law opportunities to instead serve the public leads me to believe he's on the right track and that he can't be bought off.
I don't "put all my eggs in one basket" Trump is being hammered on multiple fronts state and federal but aside from the legal implications, I'm a strong proponent of pushing the critical, substantive issues affecting all the American People to the forefront as a competing vision to the fear, hatred and divisive vitriol that Trump spews.
To triumph in November and 2020 we must excel at putting our energy and ideas into presenting something for the American People to be enthusiastically for, not just myopically focused on the abyss that Trump represents, to do otherwise would ultimately only take us down the road to Perdition.
