*Intelligent Lives* Film By Actor Chris Cooper, IQ Testing & Disability History, Family Story

- In “Intelligent Lives” Documentary, Chris Cooper Takes On America’s Shameful History of Intelligence Testing,- Salon, Aug. 2018.

Academy Award-winning actor Chris Cooper is sharing his family’s personal story with cerebral palsy and intellectual disabilities in a new documentary “Intelligent Lives,” that aims to reshape how we define intelligence and brings humanity and possibility to what once was a life sentence of isolation.
Cooper serves as the narrator and an executive producer on the film, which follows three young adults with intellectual disabilities.

In the video above, watch Salon’s premiere of the trailer for “Intelligent Lives,” directed by award-winning filmmaker Dan Habib. As the three subjects, Micah, Naieer, and Naomie, navigate high school, college, and the workforce, “Intelligent Lives” challenges perceptions of intelligence and the systems that once led to the extreme segregation from society.

Cooper, the storyteller of the documentary, contextualizes the lives of these central characters at key junctures of the film as he unpacks the sordid track record of intelligence testing in America.

*“Intelligent Lives” opens theatrically on September 21 in New York, with a nationwide release to follow. Tune in for interviews with actors, directors, artists and more on SalonTV’s live shows, “Salon Talks” and “Salon Stage”, more, https://www.salon.com/tv/e/FQEbrFN7/c/mIPs3nSJ

"Over the past century, IQ tests have been used to determine who would be institutionalized, who would be educated, and who would be forcibly sterilized. Not long ago, IQ testing was used to fuel a pseudoscience known as eugenics which called for the elimination of the menace of the 'feeble minded.' Institutions more closely resembled prisons than schools." https://intelligentlives.org/

He tends to play hard-bitten right-wing types. But he's definitely a force for good.

who also has a child with cerebral palsy, and all those involved in making this important new documentary focusing on the need to transform the label of intellectual disability from 'a life sentence of isolation into a life of possibility for the most systematically segregated people in America.' The film "Intelligent Lives" unpacks the shameful and ongoing track of intelligence tests in the US and challenges what it means to be intelligent. It points to a future in which people of all abilities can fully participate in higher education, meaningful employment, and intimate relationships.
*'Can any attempt to measure intelligence predict a person's value or ability to contribute meaningfully?' asks Chris Cooper. https://intelligentlives.org/

One evening years ago, a family at home suddenly saw that the father was experiencing symptoms of extreme physical distress. In the first vital minutes of the crisis the wife and young son of the man tried to comfort him and understand what was happening. During this time one family member, a young teen daughter calmly went to kitchen and telephoned emergency services, 9/11. That phone call saved the man's life. He lived many more years thanks to his daughter's quick thinking and actions, and medical intervention. The man was my uncle, and the daughter was my cousin. She had a mild to moderate form of the condition labelled mental retardation at the time, and since termed 'intellectual disability.'

Cousin Cici was never placed in an institution as was standard practice in the 1950s and 1960s for many people with intellectual and physical disabilities. She remained at home with her family where she accompanied her mother playing piano and singing, gardening, taking boat rides with her dad and brother, and enjoying western movies on TV. Cici also attended part time a community program for people with special needs. She was a good natured, affectionate, curious and responsible woman who lived a long and purposeful life filled with much love from her family and friends.
~In checking current descriptions of mental retardation/intellectual disability I came across this definition: "Intellectual function. Also known as IQ. This refers to a person's ability to learn, reason, make decisions, and solve problems."
Thank you Cousin Cici and much love, we were so lucky to have you in our lives.
