When I see a sig gatherer (usually outside TJoe's) I'll warn people that it's for AB&Bprofits & against San Diego residents & neighborhoods.
The Koch Bros have run so many lying signature gathering operations in their relentless bullshit campaigns against the physical and fiscal health of Ca, that I think people here becoming less and less inclined to believe these gathers. But it's still relatively easy
for Deep Pocketed Greed to gather enough signatures & get a Prop on the ballot, then swamp the airways with propaganda ads to get it passed.. It's the new, go to Repug way to pass legislation in a State they can no longer influence by elected representation.
AirB&B definitely following a page from the RW/Koch playbook with this.

The outrageous lies that are told by both sides in campaigning for various California "initiatives" absolutely staggers the imagination. They are transparent and vicious, and both sides of the issues engage in them without restraint.

The public initiative system was designed to override the strangle hold maintained by a corrupt legislature, which denied the public a voice in government, much the way that federal government does today. It has, however, been hijacked by special interests, with people being paid on a "per signature" basis to collect signatures in order to get issues on the ballot, and then with special interests spending hundreds of millions of dollars to influence voting on the issues. Most of the issues are highly inimical to the public interest.
