(16,384 posts)But as an ex-smoker, didn't everyone know that inhaling smoke from a burning plant was probably pretty bad for you? Did we really need scientists to tell us that?
Same with pollution, it's just common sense that's it's not good for living things.

(30,777 posts)but it was my first thought when I read the OP as well. I am a former smoker, and my husband is struggling to keep his quit.
Both things damage the whole body.

(1,642 posts)Common sense says it would be bad for you. But, decades ago, there was plenty of advertising and propaganda that said it wasn't unhealthy, and was in fact, an extremely cool thing to do.
We like to believe that if something were bad for us, our gov't would tell us. I no longer believe that even in the smallest way. Although it may be pleasing to think that one of gov't's functions is to protect the public health, manifestly, it is not.
So decades ago, before the Surgeon General's warning was required to be shown on the pack, we believed that because cigarettes are legal and abundantly available, the gov't says they are okay.
