Republicans Stand by Trump Because They Like What He Does

Donald Trump is probably the weakest he’s been since becoming president.

He all but confessed to trying to tilt the next election in his favor with pleas — public and private — to China and Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden, the Democratic presidential candidate and former vice president, and Biden’s son. A majority of Americans support the Democratic impeachment inquiry; a plurality wants him impeached already. His defense is anything but, as allies like Rudy Giuliani keep undermining his position with their own misconduct. His approval rating is on the wane, and he trails his Democratic opponents in key swing states like Wisconsin.

And yet most congressional Republicans refuse to break with the president. Despite his obvious wrongdoing and complete unfitness for the job, the vast majority of Republican office holders in Washington are “ride or die” supporters of Trump.

The most common explanation for this stalwart commitment is simply fear. “Across the country,” reports The Washington Post, “most G.O.P. lawmakers have responded to questions about Trump’s conduct with varying degrees of silence, shrugged shoulders or pained defenses. For now, their collective strategy is simply to survive and not make any sudden moves.” The former Arizona senator Jeff Flake made a version of this point last month, when he said that most Senate Republicans — “at least 35” — would vote to remove Trump if it were on a secret ballot.

Yes, the obvious truth is that Trump's policies are Republican policies, and they like what he's doing.

Sure, policies that are good for the wealthy and Oligarchs and that eviscerate and decimate what common folks require can be called, core Republican values.

The less we have the easier it is to control and manipulate and exploit. It works like a charm and it is our future if they are allowed to continue. You want an Oligarchy? Well, they are on it. That's in plain site. You want to play "Who Wants To Be A Feudal Lord", well, the game is afoot and the transfer of wealth is the sponsor of that show. Even a brief perusal of the statistics that indicate we have already descended into a third-world country scenario, (I mean it THAT America) will reveal that. No, it's not going to be a major news item. Are you kidding me? Seriously? Who owns the media? Rather than focusing on the Orange One's "fake news" it is better to consider omission--what is not reported or covered.

The devil is in the details here. In order to get what they want, the GOP is also going to get a very dangerous package deal. The sellout will NOT come without serious and severe consequences and inherit risks. We are already seeing that. This is a precarious situation now and the stability of the country, and even the World, is at stake here. The sellout may make them drool concerning the points I made above, but it does not even bode well for them. At a certain point, betrayal could even set in and none of them will be immune because that's when the situation is ripe for purges, etc. It won't be pretty.

I guess we will have to see how they decide to respond. I think they may privately realize what a gamble this is. Tossing dice is a dangerous way to govern in this case. Casting your lot with a despot is a fool's game, really.

He simply says and acts like a stereotypical Republican knowing this will buy him support and Republicans simply fall in line to appease him. One thing I will hand him is that he will go to any extreme to prove how much of a "devoted conservative Republican" he is and is not afraid to be excessive like all the others.

They are also scared of his rabid base, they are scared of the right wing media, and they are scared of Trump himself. Fear is a great motivator.
