Why are Hillary Clinton and Tulsi Gabbard fighting? Tension between Gabbard and Democratic leaders goes way back.
By Riley Beggin Oct 19, 2019, 12:16pm EDT
Democratic presidential candidate Rep. Tulsi Gabbard called former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton the queen of warmongers Friday in response to comments Clinton made about Gabbard on a podcast earlier in the week. The attacks marked the latest clash between the representative from Hawaii and top Democrats over her controversial foreign policy views, which at times have aligned more with conservatives than members of her own party.
The spat began when Clinton, speaking on the podcast Campaign HQ (hosted by former Obama aide David Plouffe) said Gabbard is the favorite of the Russians. They have a bunch of sites and bots and other ways of supporting her so far.
I think theyve got their eye on somebody who is currently in the Democratic primary and are grooming her to be the third-party candidate, Clinton said. A spokesman for Clinton later told the New York Times the they she was referring to were Republicans, not Russians.
No evidence was offered to support this assertion, nor have frequent allegations that Russia is helping Gabbards campaign been proven. But in the wake of Russian manipulation of the 2016 elections, some Democrats are wary of Gabbards surprising popularity in right-wing circles, concerned about her frequent mentions in Russian news media, and suspicious that Russian bots may have promoted Twitter hashtags supporting her.
Clinton seems to be one of these Democrats, and Gabbard responded Friday by saying Clintons attacks make it clear shes been behind a concerted campaign to destroy my reputation.

Several experts who track websites and social media linked to the Kremlin have also seen what they believe may be the first stirrings of an upcoming Russian campaign of support for Gabbard.
Since Gabbard announced her intention to run on Jan. 11, there have been at least 20 Gabbard stories on three major Moscow-based English-language websites affiliated with or supportive of the Russian government: RT, the Russian-owned TV outlet; Sputnik News, a radio outlet; and Russia Insider, a blog that experts say closely follows the Kremlin line. The CIA has called RT and Sputnik part of "Russia's state-run propaganda machine."

(18,319 posts)Secretary Clinton said something not about Tulsi, and Tulsi reacted by viciously attacking Secretary Clinton on social media.
As for the Vox writer's assertion concerning there being no evidence evidence, NBC News uncovered some back in February.

How Hillary Clinton Boosted Tulsi Gabbard
The 2016 Democratic nominee is right to worry about the congresswoman from Hawaiibut overshot the mark by calling her a Russian asset while offering no proof.

(18,319 posts)After all, the New York Times had a major story on Tulsi last week, well before Secretary Clinton's interview. And the NYT called out Tulsi by name.

As she injects chaos into the 2020 Democratic primary by accusing her own party of rigging the election, an array of alt-right internet stars, white nationalists and Russians have praised her.

The article you cite says that Secretary Clinton called Tulsi a Russian asset. Secretary Clinton never said anything like that.
I'm always wary of conventional wisdom and standard narratives, even more so when the pundits purveying them are sloppy with facts.
