I watched Fox News every day for 44 months - here's what I learned (Bobby Lewis)

Unbelievable what Fox can get away with. It wouldn't be allowed here in the UK - Ofcom would be down on them like a ton of bricks. I guess it's the endpoint after Reagan dismantled the "Fairness Doctrine".....

We're seeing a dismantling of Democratic institutions and the Constitution. Self rule has been their target. You cannot have self rule without an informed public.

The guest claimed that John Kerry was single-handedly responsible for the illegal incursions into Cambodia and Laos during the Vietnam War. The host listened in horror but did not dare disagree. I watched in horror from the airport lobby and decided "Never again."

This is an absolutely true story. I could not make this shit up.

The Fairness Doctrine would not have applied to Fox News. The doctrine only applied to broadcast channels, not cable. However, the repeal of the doctrine did spawn the rise of right-wing AM hate radio. IMO we don’t talk about that enough- thousands of AM talk radio stations spewing right wing nonsense daily.

Without Raygun, it may have been expanded to include all news programming.

It's just a policy. Any president could have reinstated it.

But no president after Raygun reinstated the policy.

FCC can regulate broadcast because it uses public airwaves. The govt can't regulate print, for instance. What is the phiosophical reason for allowing govt regulating cable.

2) Set up a workshop to figure out how to do the above without trampling on free speech.

which included Robert Bork and Antonin Scalia, upheld the decision. Congress then voted to codify the Doctrine, and Reagan vetoed it. The same thing would happen with Trump, assuming Moscow Mitch even let it come to a vote in the Senate.

Remember all those movies about a sinister virus or alien taking over the minds of the population, turning people hostile? That’s what Fox News propaganda has done. There is a large portion of the population who’ve wittingly or unwittingly allowed their brains to be turned to into mush incapable of even the most basic of cognitive functions . It will take decades of reprogramming to reverse that, if it can even be done during their lifetimes at all.

It's a subtle, creeping disease. It's not as if Fox has changed anyone's mind - they just magnify what conservatives already believe and repeat it over and over with the outrage meter turned up to 11. They find the most ridiculous example of some liberal somewhere doing something, and then broadcast that over and over to make it look like ALL liberals are doing it. There may be a grain to truth to some of the things they report, but it's all blown out of proportion.

We have to remember that Obama was the first Democratic president who had to contend with Fox News. Fox was around in the late 90s, but back then they actually had quite a few Democratic viewers and were more like a regular news network. They didn't hit their stride as a right-wing bastion until the advent of W.

Republicans controlled the presidency and both houses of Congress for 6 years, so the outrage was subdued. When Obama was elected they lost their collective shit.

A number of years ago, I was virtually homeless. I never slept under a bridge, but when I first graduated from couch surfing with family to renting a room, the place I found was a RW shithole, in some ways literally, but that's a different subject.

The problem was their choice of "enterntainment." They rotated between Fox, the local baseball team, and reruns of Big Bang Theory. I think they watched the latter for the pleasure of laughing at nerds and intellectuals. But basically, Rox was on their TV ALL THE FUCKING TIME. It was a small house and my only choice was to try to drown it out with the TV in my room.

I lived there about a year, and was never so happy to move at any time in my life. Normally, moving is a pain in the ass. That was a pleasure.

Yeah, I know what extended listening to Fox can teach you. Been there, done that.

We are living the nightmare of what happens when propaganda replaces fact in the news media. The American people own the airwaves and we must stand up to clean up what is ours but has been auctioned off for private profit.
