The Foursquare Church, to which Mrs. Aristus used to belong, and left in horror and disgust in November 2016, is the 'respectable' suburban evangelical Christian face of Trump's America. Their doctrine is solidly conservative, but not draconian. It's members are relentlessly, even creepily 'nice'. Their endless, insipid 'worship songs' (hymns never appear in foursquare churches) are as empty of spiritual meaning and strength as cold dishwater, but inspire upraised arms and rapturous faces on the singers.

They engage in the odd, even slightly odious practice of 'speaking in tongues', but forego the fanatical extremism of Ozark snake-handlers.

Their churches are jam-packed with facilities and services that make socializing outside the congregation unnecessary: gymnasiums, coffee shops, book stores, social gathering spaces, etc. Rubbing shoulders with outsiders only encourages open thinking and accepting hearts, which the 'nice', pleasant, non-firebreathing homophobia, anti-feminism, anti-progressivism, anti-secularism of the foursquare church abhors.

We weren’t told we couldn’t associate with kids who were non-Catholics, but they made it very clear that it sure wasn’t a good idea.
