Anti-human-trafficking groups refuse to attend Ivanka Trump’s White House summit

On Friday, President Trump is expected to attend a White House summit organized by his daughter Ivanka on human trafficking, an issue he frequently invokes as a top priority. But some of the country’s most prominent anti-trafficking organizations and advocates won’t be there. They have decided to boycott the event.

The group includes Polaris, the nonprofit organization that runs the national human-trafficking hotline, and the leader of Freedom Network USA, the country’s largest anti-trafficking coalition. Their decision comes after months of anguish over what they describe as an act of public deception. They say that although the president frequently invokes human trafficking, his administration is actively endangering a significant portion of trafficking victims: immigrants.

“We have such a chasm between rhetoric and reality,” said Martina Vandenberg, the founder of the Human Trafficking Legal Center, a network of attorneys who take on trafficking cases. “This administration is undermining protections carefully built for trafficking victims over two decades.”

The advocates are especially alarmed by increased scrutiny of T visas, which provide temporary legal status for immigrants who can prove they were trafficked while in the United States.

hey princess, did you talk to daddy about this bullshit?

From last August:

It has become even harder to survivors of human trafficking to clear their criminal records for crimes they were forced to commit.

The Trump administration, through the Department of Justice, has ordered that federal funds no longer be used to provide legal assistance for victims of trafficking hoping to vacate their records.

The sudden changes “fly in the face of the spirit and plain language” of laws passed to help trafficking victims, according to four top Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee. They are demanding an explanation from Attorney General William P. Barr.

that will jeopardize Trump's standing with the base. Helping immigrants is not something his base would tolerate.
They do just enough to have a photo op and press release and say hey look at us, we are doing this great thing - but in reality they are making it more difficult.

Its all so transparent. When they are finally kicked out of the White House, Ivanka thinks she will be able to go back to being a NY "socialite" by saying, look at all the wonderful things I did. Bullshit!

all of those women and girls who just happened to disappear from the borders? The ones I suspect are being trafficked by this administration.

OK, maybe it is a conspiracy theory but for all the crap this administration does would you be surprised?

I completely agree with them to not go.

The Hill - , I know, but . . .

EDIT

A spokesperson from one of the eight groups set to boycott Friday's event told the Post that the summit amounted to a "photo op."

“We have such a chasm between rhetoric and reality,” Martina Vandenberg of the Human Trafficking Legal Center told the newspaper. "I don’t think any of us have the desire to be a part of a photo op."

Representatives from some of the groups pointed to the Trump administration's increased scrutiny of T visas, which allows entry to the U.S. for those who can prove they were trafficked illegally.

“During that time, they are unable to work and unable to get medical care,” one trafficking survivor said of the T visa application process. “We are talking about years where people are just stuck.”
