BTRTN: The Torch was Dropped by This Generation. Now is the Moment to Pick It Up

Born To Run The Numbers reacts to the end of the Impeachment trial by invoking John F. Kennedy's Inaugural address, in which he JFK spoke of the moments when each generation must rise to protect our liberty.

http://www.borntorunthenumbers.com/2020/02/btrtn-torch-was-dropped-by-this.html

Excerpts: "Yes, Republicans have become the Vichy French of our time, a loathsome scrum of cowardice and moral bankruptcy, so intent of pleasing the audience of one in the White House that they have lost sight of the audience of one in the mirror...

"The fact is that we cannot blame Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin, cowardly Republican Senators, and the shameless sycophants on Fox News if we fail to heed John F. Kennedy’s urgent demand:'…We shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the survival and the success of liberty.'
"Generations before us saw the threats – domestic and foreign – that threatened to take our freedoms away. They fought. They took to the streets. They were not afraid. They were not lulled by Super Bowl halftime shows. They were not asleep at the wheel. O.k., Boomer, face the truth: We dropped the torch. We have allowed this to happen to our country. It has happened on our watch. Donald Trump is taking our freedom, and most Americans don’t care enough to do what we did in the late 1960s and early 1970s when a different President tried to trample on our freedom...
"The torch was passed to us, and we have let it drop. We have from now until November 3 to pick it up. Do not shrink from that responsibility. Welcome it."

As another post pointed out, 18 million more people are represented by the Senators who voted "guilty" than those who did not. 3 million more people voted for Hillary Clinton than for Trump. Al Gore got more votes than Bush.

This is not a generational failing. This is a systemic outcome of policies that have been in place for a long time, going back to at least 1979, and probably earlier. This cascading series of events that led to Trump started under Reagan. But the forces of untrammeled capitalism date back to pre World War II.

Maybe the Boomers passed the torch and no one grabbed it - but I prefer to stay away from pitting generations against each other. There are plenty of Boomers who are still fervent and idealistic, and plenty of checked-out Gen Xers and Millennials.

We - and our counterparts in Europe - are also locked in a deadly cold war with Russia, who is determined to bring down the West. Sowing this kind of discord helps their efforts. Don't fall for it.

The young do not vote in the large numbers they should. This is their failing, not anyone else's. They are part of the reason we have trump.

People turned out all over the country at 5:30 local time to protest acquittal. What struck us immediately was that at least 75% of them appeared to be Boomers, in city after city.

one of those protests last night. It was 26 degrees outside, and we were there.

You are right. There were few young people present.

Vibrant, productive people, out in the streets, waving signs, making noise. (I hadn't actually heard about this beforehand, so I don't even know how they got the word out).

but we are making inroads. We show up.

There was one lone Magat across the street from us. He was wearing an oversized red hat. (Or else he was such a pinhead that it looked oversized). He waved his trump 2020 sign, like the fool he is. He was so stupid he was not even wearing a coat. I hope he catches pneumonia.

...when the Constitution with its fatal flaws was enacted.

The structure of the Senate, mirrored in the Electoral College, were specifically intended to protect minority rule by the white supremacists in slave states.

It still serves the same function.

I beg to differ, I never went along with ANY of this shit, starting with NOT VOTING FOR RONALD FUCKING REAGAN.
