'Mayor Pete' Departs: Buttigieg To Suspend Presidential Campaign

Pete Buttigieg, the 38-year-old who rose from being mayor of a midsize Indiana city to mounting a serious presidential run, officially suspended his campaign on Sunday evening.

"The truth is that the path has narrowed to a close," Buttigieg told a crowd in his hometown of South Bend, Ind., after being introduced by his husband Chasten. "We have a responsibility to consider the effect of remaining in this race any further," he added.

The former mayor joked about his relative anonymity when he decided to run last year: "Hardly anybody knew my name, and even fewer could pronounce it."

was supposed to be the keynote speaker at our Governor's Day brunch in Illinois. He had laryngitis, and could not speak.

Dick Durbin called Cheri Bustos and asked her if she had any ideas about a speaker. She described Mayor Pete and spoke about how up-and-coming he was, how smart, how personable, etc., etc. She had read about him, she said, but not met him.

Durbin asked his name. She could not remember! Senator Durbin found his name, contacted him, and got him to agree to be our speaker. He was wonderful!

"Suspend", not 'end'.

While most headlines will say 'end', most politicians don't officially end their campaign.

Saw an article several years ago that explained why 'suspend' is more often the case.

A suspended campaign can still seek and accept donations.
