Republicans like me built this moment. Then we looked the other way.
'Stuart Stevens is a writer and Republican political consultant who has advised a pro-Bill Weld super PAC in the 2020 election. His book about the Republican Party, It Was All A Lie, will be published next month.
Dont just blame President Trump. Blame me and all the other Republicans who aided and abetted and, yes, benefited from protecting a political party that has become dangerous to America. Some of us knew better.
But we built this moment. And then we looked the other way.
Many of us heard a warning sound we chose to ignore, like that rattle in your car you hear but figure will go away. Now were broken down, with plenty of time to think about what should have been done.
The failures of the governments response to the coronavirus crisis can be traced directly to some of the toxic fantasies now dear to the Republican Party. Here are a few: Government is bad. Establishment experts are overrated or just plain wrong. Science is suspect. And we can go it alone, the world be damned.'>>>

I suggest we take advantage of any repugs 'apparently' taking 'our' point now, give them credit, and welcome them.

(5,072 posts)I am curious however, about whether Mr. Stevens is being active in trying to undo some of the harm he and his cohorts have inflicted on the rest of us, rather than just lamenting his wrong-pigheadedness.

(21,795 posts)Believe me, if this was President Ted Cruz or President Marco Rubio or President Newt Gingrich and they were pursuing the exact same policies Stevens, Rick Wilson, Bill Kristol, Joe Scarborough and all the rest would be praising this shit.
These are Republicans that think of themselves as "The Cool Kids", and now they are embarrassed that someone as gauche as Trump is exposing their callousness.
These are smart, clever people. They will be our opposition again very soon, simply because they don't have the same values we do. Why do you think the Russians decided to buy the Republican Party, not the Democratic Party?
As you appreciate the rapier like wit of Rick Wilson, bear in my mind that in the past he has used that cleverness against people like me and you (Democrats) and in the future he will no doubt do so again. He and all the others will be rebuilding their Party as a kinder and gentler GOP.
FFS! How many times have we seen this old B-Movie? And the audiences are still buying tickets.

(3,424 posts)That small rattle from the car being ignored comparison is utter B. S.
More like a car with bad brakes ready to let go, careening out of control at any moment.
