Germany's Low Coronavirus Mortality Rate Intrigues Experts
'Germany's low coronavirus mortality rate intrigues experts.' Some query data methodology while others say high testing rates are giving more accurate picture. The Guardian, March 22, 2020. Experts:
Germanys relatively low mortality rate continues to intrigue experts as Covid-19 spreads across Europe, with some questioning the methodology behind its data gathering while others argue the countrys high testing rates allow a more accurate approximation of the threat posed by the novel coronavirus.
While the pandemic has hit Germany with full force, with Johns Hopkins University noting 22,364 confirmed infections by Sunday morning, only 84 people are so far reported to have died.
This means Germany currently has the lowest mortality rate of the 10 countries most severely hit by the pandemic: 0.3% compared with 9% in Italy and 4.6% in the UK.
The contrast with Italy is especially surprising because the two countries have the highest percentage of citizens aged 65 or over in Europe. If anything, the Bloomberg Global Health Index would suggest Italians have a healthier lifestyle than Germans.
...Its too early to say whether Germany is better medically prepared for the Covid-19 pandemic than other countries, said Marylyn Addo, who heads the infectiology department at Hamburgs University Medical Centre.
One likely explanation for the discrepancy in figures, Addo suggested, was that while northern Italys hospitals are being overrun with new patients, Germanys are not yet at full capacity and have had more time to clear beds, stock up on equipment and redistribute personnel.
One advantage Germany has is that we started doing professional contact tracing when the first cases were reported, Addo said. It bought us some time to prepare our clinics for the coming storm.
Crucially, Germany started testing people even with milder symptoms relatively early on, meaning the total number of confirmed cases may give a more accurate picture of the viruss spread than in other states.
According to Germanys National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians, the country has capacity for about 12,000 Covid-19 tests per day, while Wieler has claimed it has capacity for 160,000 tests per week...

(35,320 posts)Just that the reported number may be more accurate.
We had a good suspicion of this from S. Korea's numbers. China's mortality is down to 1.4, S. Korea's was 0.9 with better testing, and while they issue numbers for the US they say pretty consistently that they expect the final figure to be < 1.0.
People like citing the most extreme numbers possible. If a study says "the range is 50,000 to 330,000" the reporter will say, once, "Up to 330,000" and in the following text drop the "up to" as though the One True Number is "330,000". Of course, people who don't read the full article wouldn't see the "up to" in the first place, and people who didn't track down the easily citable study would have no reason to suspect that the most likely number, according to the authority cited, was much lower. (No, these aren't random numbers, just the last such report I vented about.)
Remember, everything not exhaustively counted has error bars, and there's a number that the error bars bracket. Reporters most often only see the likely upper bound if that suits their narrative, or the likely lower bound (if that suits them).

Said this earlier today,we are getting our Information from the "Ministry of Truth" as Orwell called it.
As the Editor of the Guardian Newspaper European Edition said, the Reporters in the USA do not have the Skill Set as to how to report the news coming out of our White House or our Government. The Access Model of Reporting will only cause more misinformation and out right lies to be reported as fact.
And Germany as well as South Korea know if one is to act a problem,on needs facts to work with. Propaganda only has a certain lifespan in today's world with electronic communications being what they are.
