Letters to the Editor: I cared for polio patients in iron lungs, and I'm sick of anti-vaxxers (LAT)
To the editor: Thanks to Dr. Nina Shapiro for her letter to the editor on the importance of vaccinating children.
If those who are so opposed to vaccines had to care for small children who were in an iron lung or dying of measles encephalitis, it might give them pause. I have cared for these children.
Im an 83-year-old retired registered nurse who did a one-month rotation in polio respirator nursing. This was at a hospital endowed by actress Helen Hayes, whose daughter died of polio.
My patience with anti-vaccine folks has not just worn thin it is worn out.

(66,462 posts)The way I see it, they would probably overjoyed to have something else to reject and throw shade on.
They do what they do because it gives them some kind of squalid, toxic fulfillment. They're not going to stop just because vaccines are needed now more than ever.

(115,836 posts)and I remember her talking about the kids in iron lungs that she'd cared for. She used iron lung stories to get us kids to stop whining about having to get the polio shots. Anti-vaxxers and anti-maskers are idiots who are threatening everyone's health.
