"Pulling down statues? It's a tradition...."
https://www.nationalgeographic.com/history/2020/07/pulling-down-statues-tradition-dates-back-united-states-independence/This was the same route protestors took in 1765 when New Yorkers demonstrated against the Stamp Act taxing a host of goods. The following year, the colonys assembly commissioned the statue in recognition of the kings support in repealing the despised legislation. Modeled on the classical equestrian sculpture of Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, it arrived from London in 1770 and was erected with great pomp. When John Adams paid his first visit to New York in 1774, he wrote to his wife Abigail that the kings statue was very large, of solid lead, gilded with gold, standing on a pedestal of marble very high.
Two years later, fervent New Yorkers, with the help of Washingtons soldiers, quickly pulled it from its plinth and broke it into pieces. Much of the lead was shipped to Connecticut and melted down to make 42,008 bullets. U.S. Postmaster Ebenezer Hazard wrote that the statue has been pulled down to make musket ball of, so that his troops will probably have melted Majesty fired at them.......

(4,602 posts)Unless people are trying to foment an actual bloody revolution I wouldnt recommend it.
If you dont like a particular statue petition the government to take it down. If enough people agree youll get your way. And if they dont...you wont.

1776: After a reading of the Declaration of Independence, New Yorkers descended on Bowling Green and pulled down a statue of King George III.
Imagine those thugs destroying history. Now well never know who won the Revolutionary War.

(21,450 posts)remember Benedict Donald's speech about how Washington's army attacked the British planes and destroyed their airports?
Don't remember the location or occasion. Might have been last year's 4th celebration. He really did say that.

There's some good messaging.
It's one thing to say, "You know, they said a lot of good things, made some bad compromises, but had problems."
It's another thing to say that Hamilton was Hussein and that not only should we remove statues, but, I guess, anybody who admired him must be truly evil.
Well, there's one Puerto Rican totalitarian we'll be coming for when we finally have freedom and justice.
