War or Revolution Every 75 Years. It's Time Again.
When Charles Dickens wrote "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times" to begin "A Tale of Two Cities," he compared the years of the French Revolution to his own "present period." Both were wracked with inequality. But he couldn't have known that 75 years later inequality would cause the Great Depression. Or that 75 years after that, in our own present period, extreme inequality would return for a fourth time, to impact a much greater number of people. He probably didn't know that the cycles of history seem to drag the developed world into desperate times about every 75 years, and then seek relief through war or revolution.
It's that time again.
"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times; it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness; it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity; it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness; it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair; we had everything before us, we had nothing before us; we were all going directly to Heaven, we were all going the other way." -- CHARLES DICKENS
Three cycles (225 years) ago, in the years before the French Revolution, inequality was at one of its highest points ever. While it's estimated that the top 10% of the population took almost half the income, as they do today, the Gini Coefficient was between .52 and .59, higher than the current U.S. figure of .47. The French Revolution began a surge toward equality that lasted well into the 19th century.
Two cycles ago, in Dickens' day of the 1860s, European inequality was again at a nearly intolerable level. It took the second industrial revolution and the U.S. Civil War to start correcting the economic injustices.
One cycle ago was the Great Depression. The New Deal, World War 2, and the laborious process of war recovery put an end to this third period of extreme inequality.

When one (1) man can give 100 million dollars ($100,000,000.00) to buy a President, it is time for change......

This country won't survive another civil war. It will break up into several smaller countries, at the very least, with little in common but the acreage devoted to displaying the headstones of the new honored dead.

(1,670 posts)or the violent responses to the Occupy movement
or that statistic showing the USA beats all others for people imprisoned vs population (creating a permanent underclass with no voting rights, etc,)
or the current union-busting atmosphere, (I'm kinda thinking it's being done to eventually create another slave class..if you folks aren't there already)
or the continuing foreclosure crap
or look at the DHS money (& military equipment donations) to your police forces
or the fact that said police are now looking into armed drone tech
With the way that 'conservatives' or republicans have entrenched themselves in all the major positions of power (by hook or by crook...mostly by crook methinks) they are NOT going to leave quietly
..& with what happened in Wisconsin it's just getting worse. I remember seeing the Rachael Maddow clip showing all the republican campaign donors...vs just one itty-bitty union group for the dems. She then explained it's likely that wisconsin will never go back to to the dems on account of issues like that. & with Walker winning the election you know they will continue to ram legislation through to further weaken the peoples' will to resist big business practices
& I kinda think quite a few elections have been rigged over the last decade or so due to electronic voting (& counting machines), with so many 'anomalies' popping up in so many traditionally democrat areas...what they can't win they'll steal.
How do fight back against that kind of corruption, etc, non-violently? The occupy movement tried but can do nothing about the agent provocateurs & such that give police & other 'authorities' reasons to start busting heads
...you folks are being pushed into a corner. I don't think they are going to give you any options BUT revolution or civil war.
Whatever move towards equality that actually occurs, will not be peaceful.
Power cedes nothing without a struggle. Never did, never will.
We have to find a way to win over the military. Perhaps if enough of their family members are protesting.
Worked in Iran and Egypt to a degree. But if the military is loosed upon us, the blood will flow deep.
War could become nuclear. Warmongers & their families, children & grandchildren will be fine because they are immune to nuclear cataclysm.I actually think the warmongers believe this.

(135 posts)One thing the ruling class has consistently failed to take into account is the interactive and pervasive nature of the Internet. Yes, they can push a button and shut it down, but only locally and temporarily. The technology has spread too far too fast for them to control it the way they control, say, the TV news.
Another thing people in general don't realize is how vulnerable the network is. One good EMP (possibly from a dirty bomb) would fry all the unprotected electronics in your city. That includes televisions, computers, routers, phones, auto engines, and anything else with a chip in it.

(17,621 posts)Just look at DU. Even if it were possible for the ruling class to shut it down, we have been sharing news for years around here. I am always hearing about things here before I hear about them anywhere else. The truth is already out there, and the ruling class can't change that.
