GOP now running afoul of NRA in N.C., other states

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) --

... GOP leaders in Nashville infuriated the NRA this year by refusing to go along with a bill to prevent businesses from banning guns on their property, and now the group is using its deep pockets to try to unseat one of them. Elsewhere, NRA-backed measures also ran into Republican roadblocks in Georgia, Alabama and Idaho this year.

In North Carolina, the NRA lamented the failure of the Republican-controlled Senate to approve a bill to allow concealed permit holders to carry their guns in restaurants where alcohol is served. Chamber leader Phil Berger said the Senate wanted to take its time on the bill, and some Republicans had raised concerns about mixing alcohol and firearms ...

The NRA refused to budge, and a lobbyist confidently predicted to Tennessee lawmakers early in the legislative session that the Georgia law would be corrected this year. That didn’t come to pass, nor did an effort for similar legislation in neighboring Alabama, where the bill died without coming to a vote in the Republican-controlled House.

Before the legislative session in Idaho this year, the NRA planned to resurrect a bill to allow students at state universities to carry concealed weapons on campus. But no bill was introduced to replace the measure that died in the Republican-controlled Senate the previous year ...

scariest part of this story for me is "NRA planned to resurrect a bill to allow students at state universities to carry concealed weapons on campus" now that's a bad idea. there's just a little bit of excessive drinking and fighting in college.

in businesses that serve alcohol, or in banks, or anywhere in the town square, basically. A person who would bring a gun to a bar, or any business in town where people are peacefully assembled and going about their lives, is not civilized, IMNSHO.

And yes, I grew up and live in a rural county where shooting one's dinner is the norm. There is a time and place for everything. Guns are tools, just like any other tool. There are times and places where they are appropriate, and times and places where they are not. The NRA forgot that a long time ago.

Tell it to Dr. Suzanna Hupp..civilized only works if everyone plays along..one fly in the ointment turns a civilized gathering into a not so civilized affair..

Is that all you've got? Well, somebody, sometime might do something to me, so I'd best be on the look out.

Life is a risk. You could have a home invasion too. Rare, but it happens.

Waking up and walking out your front door is a risk. But somehow, I manage.

Honestly, I'm more afraid of insecure, trigger-happy yahoos who think owning a gun gives them a machismo pass than of running in to genuine criminals.

since you are about 2 1/2 times more likely to be struck than to be shot by a ccw holder regardless why shot...(the vast, vast majority of ccw shootings are legitimate self defense.)

Yeah, life is a risk. Do you wear your seat belt? Have a fire extinguisher? Smoke detectors? A storm plan? A few days worth of food and water during storm seasons? Fence around the swimming pool? Locks on the doors of your home? A jack and spare tire in your car?..Do you try to mitigate possible risks to yourself and family? Yeah, most smart people do at least some of these things..

Lucky you if you can live in an area which is so safe you haven't a care in the world..not everybody has that good fortune..

BTW, I carried for work for years before my state had shall issue ccw..I changed careers because I tired of carrying a gun everyday..I haven't carried for 5 years..don't even have a permit any longer. Anyone who can pass a background check to buy a gun should be allowed to defend themselves with a gun..46 (IIRC) states have shall issue concealed carry...not one has a credible bill, even in discussion, to repeal..the proof is in the stats...
