Meghan McCain's sexist comment shows why Nikki Haley has no chance of winning the GOP nominationRepublicans may say they're be okay with a female president, but they always find an excuse to not vote for a woman

(Salon) Leave it to Meghan McCain to offer the perfect example of the ironclad rule: Anyone who claims they are "not sexist" is about to say something ridiculously sexist. In this case, the former host of "The View" revealed her misogynist instincts with regards to Vice President Kamala Harris, in a recent episode of McCain's podcast.
"Not because of sexism," McCain claimed before she unloaded a series of sexist stereotypes about Harris, saying the vice president is "really unserious" and sounds like "a 19-year-old stoner in college who's high at 3 a.m." McCain insisted it's a mystery why "I have a very strong adverse reaction to her."
"If anything, Vice President Harris has proven to me that maybe a woman can't be Vice President. I actually think she's setting feminism back 10 years," McCain said. She then covered her tracks by claiming, clearly falsely, "There are so many female politicians I love and respect that I'd be happy with being President."
Ah yes, the old "I'd love to vote for a woman, just not that woman" gambit. As Maggie Astor of the New York Times wrote in 2019, "Few Americans acknowledge they would hesitate to vote for a woman for president." Instead, they simply hold women to a standard so high and contradictory that no woman could ever meet it. For instance, sexist voters dislike ambition in female politicians, but of course, the mere act of running for office is inherently ambitious. Or, as with McCain's "19-year-old" comment, sexists will sneer at the high timbre of a woman's voice. But if a woman has a voice low enough to sound like a man's, they would object that it's weird and off-putting. ...............(more)

(3,044 posts)Maybe if they have no choice between a Repug woman or person of color and a Joe Biden, but in a field of white men in a primary, the old prejudices will win out. Sadly.

(6,232 posts)that the MAGA repubs hate women & minorities. I have said for a long time that they need to be thoroughly defeated or they will never change. They have white hater voters and the rich. We all need to hang tough and vote for the Biden/Harris team. Then those who keep saying that Biden is too old (I don't) can focus on 2028.

I gave up the View when she was on it and its so much more enjoyable to watch!

(399 posts)I said to her that I felt that the country would elect a black man over any woman. Its just the way it is. She changed her support from Hillary to Barack.
The 2016 election confirmed this. An obvious, articulate and experience woman is defeated by a reprehensible joke of a man, who everyone instinctively knew beforehand would screw up the country totally.

(10,265 posts)I realize their attacks are purely motivated by racism and misogyny; the prospect of a black woman as president scares the shit out of them. Still, such over-the-top invective normally requires some sort of factual basis, however tenuous. But, seriously, what has Kamala Harris ever done?
The relentless attacks on Hunter Biden are laughably nonsensical, but at least they're somewhat understandable. Hunter's past drug use, ongoing legal problems and social media antics haven't helped his cause. And, let's face it, Bill Clinton's personal scandals were largely self-inflicted, he had no one to blame but himself.
This crazy stuff about Harris is straight out of the Hillary playbook. Republicans began bashing Clinton during her husband's first campaign, and it escalated when she became First Lady and got involved in healthcare policy. And all the crap Michelle Obama had to put up with for simply taking an interest in kids' school lunches? I mean, WTF?

(742 posts)I had so much respect for Madeleine Albright and Hillary Clinton because of the seemingly unlimited depth of their foreign policy chops. Every time they spoke/speak I was all ears and I ALWAYS learned something. The level of shear, unadulterated impressiveness is at the same time both what we absolutely need in world leaders and the most intimidating thing to even moderate voters (as evidenced by the 2016 election).
I'm so tired of the "If you're going to be a successful woman in politics, you have to be X" tropes.
Kamala Harris is successful because she's smart, educated, strategic, focused, etc. The world seems to dislike all of those attributes when it's from a female. But I can't say that I learn something from her when she speaks. I can't say I'm all ears and eager to hear her perspective on world affairs. Her responses always come out canned, planned and political. I know she's very intelligent and probably could go toe to toe with Hillary on any topic, but she doesn't let herself. I can't begin to put myself in her shoes and know what hurdles and ramifications she sees before she responds to questions, so I give her the benefit of the doubt. But I would so love to see her unshackled and able to speak her mind without fear of reprisals.
