How Billionaire's Privilege is Taking Down Our Republic

Thom Hartmann

In America today, if you can afford at least $50 million in lawyers fees, you can get away with rape, massive financial fraud over decades, ripping off people who just wanted to go to college, stealing from children’s Cancer charities, paying off porn stars to influence an election, and leading a treasonous insurrection against your own country that results in the death of at least six people plus 3 police officers (with over 100 police officers ending up in the hospital, many with life altering injuries) without ever spending a night in jail.

Michael Cohen was sent to New York’s notorious Riker’s Island prison for paying off porn star Stormy Daniels and Playboy centerfold Karen MacDougal to keep them quiet in the weeks before the 2016 election about their affairs with Donald Trump.

Having the affairs wasn’t Cohen’s idea, and he never slept with either woman. It wasn’t even his idea to pay them off: that came from Donald Trump and David Pecker, who called it “catch and kill” as in, “pay off the women to kill the story.”

But Michael Cohen went to prison for this crime: a crime designed to get Donald Trump elected president even though in the weeks just before the 2016 election the Access Hollywood “When you’re a star, they let you do it…” tape had come out.

the legal system that previous rich men created and keep in place.

We can have democracy in this country, or we can have great wealth concentrated in the hands of a few, but we can't have both.

and people need to remember that we have seen before the concentration of wealth in the hands of the few and those few having outsized control over the elected officials and the courts. The Gilded Age set the scene for so much misery in this country.

4. To be fair, he hasn't got away with a lot of those as yet.

Some are going to bite back ... and hard.

Hell, the Inserection trial hasn't even started yet really ... and it's a big one. He didn't exactly get away with rape scott free, if you could even put a price on suffering through that from that nor sex with a porn straw, the phony University or financial fraud either for that matter.

Sure, he's skated on a lot of stuff going through his best life back when he was a big shot in the NYC area. But he just had to try and be a big shot on the World Scene and in the process has called a lot of attention to himself and to his nefarious dealings and I'm sorry, but he just isn't going to get away with shit like he did before.

Before it's all over he's going to regret sticking his ass out where everyone and everything can see his every move, often before he does and about the best he's going to be able to do is delay, like he's doing now.

I claim one caveat here and that is: all bets are off if he wins the Presidency but I doubt that will happen.

Seriously.

7. If Chump couldn't win in 2020, when he was holding all the cards

... how could he possibly win in 2024 when he has very few cards left in his hand?

Seriously, the Repukes will try to cheat their asses off and it won't matter. Too many Americans HATE Chump for what he did as president, and FEAR him for what he says he'll do if he ever gets back into the White House. I'm including many GOP members in that number of Americans. They won't say it out loud, but they are not voting for Chump in November. All we Dems have to do is Get The Vote Out and get the Independent voters to the polls to help us, and Chump is toast.

I agree with a lot of your post, Chump is getting a very soft handling by the Dept of Justice and by the judiciary (so far) because of the lack of precedence in any of this. Our system of justice runs on precedence and when there is none, they get a little bit skittish. So they're bending over backwards to avoid the appearances of "political motivation." Of course, Chump is milking this by his constant screaming about political motives and witch hunts.

Glenn Kirschner commented on this very thing on his blog post yesterday. It's up to the American voters to "prosecute" Chump by going to the polls in November, since our judiciary seems to be slow-walking every issue having to do with Chump. There's going to be a BLUE WAVE like we've never seen in this country.

We haven't even seen what else those magats behind the scenes are planning. Miller, Stone, Flynn, and the usual thugs.

Besides all their other plans like restricting voting hours....closing polling stations. And throwing black sounding names off the polls. Maybe cancelling mail voting in some swing States. A massive disinformation campaign using Putin's help. And of course Musk's help.

We don't know what else they have planned. Will they use violence on voting day? Bomb scares? Intimidation on polling lines? Dare I say threats and even assassination attempts? With the way Trump is stoking up his base, I wouldn't put anything past them.

....take a look at how they are treated by Putin in Russia. Sure, some of them survive, but several have been known to fall out of high windows, or be sentenced to years in jail, or crash in planes.

Do they really think they would stay on Trump's "good" side?

The Koch Foundation is a big player in wanting to kill much of the federal government. I don’t know whether Leonard Leo and the backers of the Heritage Foundation are billionaires, but they are using their millions to destroy democracy, as are several tech billionaires and multi-millionaires.

I have come to believe that no country should allow personal wealth to exceed a billion dollars. We need better tax policies.

Make every lawyer a government employee, we all pay for them anyway one way or the other.
