A "must read" book about power in contemporary China

"The Party" by Richard McGregor is the best of several books I've read lately to try to better understand China.

This book focuses on the role played by the Communist Party in running the government and just about all the major industry in the country.

It's a stunner. Turns out you can't really understand anything about China until you understand the role and importance of the Communist Party of China in running everything.

if the topic interests you, read this book.

"Lost on Planet China" by J Maartin Troostis is very readable and insightful. A very pleasant and sometimes funny read.

I also read a book called "China Inc." a while back (the authors name escapes me) which was mostly focused on US China trade and relations, but also was worthwhile reading.

I'd say anyone who read "The Party" and "Lost on Planet China" would have reasonable start on understanding what's going on there, beyond what we usually see in the media.
