Lynyrd Skynyrd decides it’s finally time to stop using the Confederate flag

http://www.salon.com/2012/09/21/lynyrd_skynyrd_decides_its_finally_time_to_stop_using_the_confederate_flag/

By Prachi Gupta

The ’70s Southern rock band has decided that now is the time to to stop flaunting a flag that’s been offensive to people pretty much since its conception. Gary Rossington, the only original member left in the band, told CNN that they will stop using the Confederate flag as a stage decoration because it could be misconstrued as racist:

“Through the years, people like the KKK and skinheads kinda kidnapped the Dixie or Southern flag from its tradition and the heritage of the soldiers, that’s what it was about,” Rossington said. “We didn’t want that to go to our fans or show the image like we agreed with any of the race stuff or any of the bad things.”

Most people have applauded Lynyrd Skynyrd for their decision but there have been a few dissenters. CNN collected responses of fans who didn’t support the action:

“Good luck with your next release ‘Sweet home Massachusetts.’ I am sure it will climb the charts with a bullet in Yankee-land,” said one. “This isn’t the real Lynyrd Skynyrd anyway. They should have taken a name like ‘Obama’s Politically Correct Sell Your Soul Make Believe Impostors’ or something,” opined another.

Still the value of that logic was plain for them to see for all of those years, and they have just now gotten it? Either their IQ's have just made a quantum leap (which I know is an impossibility), or else their music has lost its base (no pun intended).

It's actually more along the lines of once the war started many common people had no choice but to fight. Most of the people doing the fighting had no slaves, but they were for the most part willingly drug along by the ones that did. So the ones that weren't fighting to keep slavery going were fighting under a banner of keeping slavery going. Which is close enough.

Yeah, they are a little slow on the uptake. And I had no idea they even used the confederate flag, I just hope they didn't desecrate it in anyway or conservatives would have their heads on a plate. I am glad they came around though kinda would like to know how that conversation came about. Wonder if it was anything like this one.

We are one country. During the Civil War, we were a divided country. When we united again, the Southern states flew the US flag once again. To me, that makes the Confederate one the flag of an enemy combatant. Meaning anyone who flies that flag could be construed as someone who doesn't believe the Civil War ended. For them, it wasn't the Civil War, it was the "War of Northern Aggression."

Why don't they fly the US flag and that of their home state of Florida?

because the Stars and Bars are also acceptable substitute for the sacred Stars and Stripes according to the Conservative Patriotism Rules.
