Why doesn't Obama do something about gas prices?
I hear that one all the time.
The "Tea Party" generation is full of bile over the prices of gas and keep ranting
about how the president is controling us thru high prices. Here's one take and
a brilliant response:
"Dear Cecil:
My wonderful father, born in 1939, insists high gas prices are the only reason the economy is in the tank (no pun intended). He constantly tells me Richard Nixon was able to stave off economic hardship for our country because he froze gas prices during his presidency and that if Obama truly wanted to improve the economy, all he would have to do is freeze gas prices too. Did Nixon actually freeze gas prices? Could Obama, if he wanted to, do the same so I could pay $2 per gallon instead of $3.30? Or is Obama really trying to destroy the country and push his socialistic/communist agenda (my dads words, not mine) by making us pay higher prices at the pump?"
This column is a hoot; it's from one of those rare (and still published) alternative
papers, a relic of the '70s, which I still read and enjoy... from Obamaland (Chicago)-

(23,156 posts)I often feel as if I'm the only person alive who still does, even thought it was only forty years ago.
At the very time they were instated, all the economists who were not comatose said that these could only work in the short run, and that as soon as they were lifted, prices and wages would rebound sharply. And they were right.
Meanwhile, they stopped raises almost entirely while only some prices held steady. Those of us caught in the wage controls were angry, resentful, and hurt financially.

(710 posts)If Congress were serious about lowering gasoline prices they could ban exports of gasoline to Europe and require refinfers to operate at minimum capacity level. However, that would lower oil company profits and you know whose campaigns they are funding...

(906 posts)It would certainly address the demand side of American refined fuel.
The only thing I can come up with (other than the knowledge that those that make billions off of said exports are bribing officials, er, I mean, contributing to election campaigns) is that perhaps there is an expectation that oil producing nations would retaliate.

(1,486 posts)the President has as much control over gas prices as he does over the price of milk, diapers, and iphones.
I remember Nixon's freezing prices, when the controls came off prices jumped and wages remained stagnant (still stagnant to this day)

(50,562 posts)Obama has no more control over gas prices than he does over Romney's stupidity. Like the latter, gas prices is what they is.
