Gun lobby thrives just 3 miles from Sandy Hook school where shooter killed 26

A powerful gun lobby operates a mere three miles from the Connecticut elementary school where 26 people were shot to death by a deranged killer.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation, based in Newtown, expressed its sympathies to the victims of the nation’s latest gun violence after Friday’s mass murder left 20 small children dead ...

But the foundation, headquartered in a massive white building with a U.S. flag flying out front, had no problem funneling $103,500 in donations to candidates in New York State in 2010 — including $80,000 to the Senate Republican Campaign Committee ...

Nationally, the foundation has spent about $500,000 on lobbying this year — five times what it doled out in 2008, according to The New Republic ...
