Report: State Education Cuts Causing 'Surge' in University Tuition Prices
Higher education tuition hikes disproportionately impact low-income students
- Lauren McCauley, staff writer
The gross slashing of funds for public universities has caused a "surge" in tuition prices, disproportionately impacting low-income students says a new report from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP).
States are spending an average of 28 percent less this year on public university funding than they did in 2008a decrease of $2,353 per student. According to CBPP, thirty-six states cut funding by over 20 percent and eleven slashed their budgets by more than one-third. Arizona and New Hampshire have cut their higher education spending in half.

The for-profits just hate good public schools, like UPS with the Post Office, they hate the cheap competition.

when our boys will be back in school. One in his last year of Grad school and one in his Sophomore year, both attending schools in the UNC System, but still tuition and everything else going up is not going to be well received by our family. Good news is that our daughter is still 3 years away from high school graduation and if she doesn't start taking school seriously, we will not have to worry about her college education. That 14 year old will be the death of me yet.....
