Harry Reid given chance to make his case to the public, on PBS NewsHour, mumbles away an opportunity

Last edited Thu Jul 25, 2013, 08:54 PM - Edit history (2)

Last night on PBS's News Hour, Judy Woodruff interviewed Harry Reid and gave him plenty of opportunity to explain to viewers what the Corporate Media have not been telling the AMerican people. Instead Reid gave viewers such a abbreviated view of matters that I think most viewers, if they didn't know about the destructive actions of the Republicans already, they certainly wouldn't have learned anything from Senator Reid.

JUDY WOODRUFF: But let’s talk about that poll. You just cited 83 percent of Americans disapprove of the job that Congress is doing -- the lowest rate it’s ever had. Are Americans right in their perception?

HARRY REID: "Yes, of course they’re right. Gridlock. We have gridlock. We have a House of Representatives -- they’re doing nothing. ...

We have to start talking about things we work on together, and that is what’s missing here."

NOw, why didn't Reid inform people of some specifics. Just saying "Gridlock" doesn't make anything more understandable. This was Reid's chance to point out that the Republicans have set records for filibustering legislation and Presidential appointments. I'll bet about 90+% of the tv viewers of Corporate Media don't even know this (they certaily wouldn't have heard it on PBS NewsHour). Just saying "Gridlock" just sounds like a Democrat blaming Republicans without any basis (i.e. facts). It just leads people to infer that Democrats are no better than Republicans.

Jesus Christ Reid, make your case, state specifics. And don't talk with insider short-hand. People outside the beltway have to have some of these details explained to them. Jesus! I thought anybody who has been reelected as many times as you have would be a better communicator. Christ, Harry get some help. Take a speech class or something.

With the very next question, Woodruff asked, Harry Reid was almost on the right track but he didn't follow through:

JUDY WOODRUFF: You said most of the blame lies with the Republicans, but don’t, in fairness, the Democrats bear some of the responsibility?

HARRY REID: "Judy, you should tell me -- I’ll take whatever blame is there, but we have people who work all the time trying to come up with issues. I talked about Patty Murray. She has really worked hard. We got a budget passed over here. The Republicans won’t let us even go to conference on that. We have Barbara Mikulski who is so energetic on starting the appropriations process again. She has a wonderful relationship with Dick Shelby, who is a ranking member."

RIGHT!! When dealing with a biased interviewer ask them the question as you started with: "Judy, you should tell me.."

.... Okay, Harry you were almost there. You provided a narrative citing some examples of Democrats making efforts to work with Republicans to get legislation moving --- but it would have been better to start off by listing some points - yes, like you are grilling an uncooperative witness:

"Well, Judy you tell me if I'm wrong: since President Obama was elected, the Republlicans have filibustered legislative actions 360 times (according to CNN, but you, Harry may have a better number) .. a record. They have even filibustered a commission they proposed ( "..GOP leader Mitch McConnell led a filibuster of a deficit-reduction commission that he himself had demanded.&quot . Even so, Democrats like Senator Murray and Barbara Mikulski have made great efforts ........ . So are we Democrats exaggerating? You tell me Judy?"

The con-men on the other side of the aisle are quite good at selling their fraudulent arguments. They make them sound almost reasonable and well thought out - quite a trick to pull off. But Democrats seem to think that the public will find out what's going on through the air or something, or maybe they get it from Gwen Awful and the other GOP toadies of M$M?? Yeah, like Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will wish all Jews a happy Hanukkah this year.

.... You certainly came across as an affable ol' fella Harry, but couldn't you have prepared a bit better? Couldn't you have had somebody write you some clear, concise, statements to make. Something with some 'punch' to it? You know some of the Democratic voters out here are tired of seeing Republicans throwing shit on Democrats faces and the Democrats just smiling and wiping the shit off their faces saying: "Well now, heh, heh, that's not very nice. Let's try to get along with one another. - That is, if you don't mind me saying so....."

Just a thought Senator Reid.

And I was one of the president's biggest supporters before he failed so miserably at trying to lead the party and the country. Neither one of them has any spine, any fortitude, any passion for taking on the Republicans. Either they are just incompetent, or they're just play-actors that we were given to try to convince us that someone is resisting the right-wing takeover.

Reid and Pelosi are so lacking in any coherent message or ability to persuade, no wonder we are so fucked.
