Saudi Arabia to hit back at US in Syria

Tensions between the two countries have grown sharply in recent months

Riyadh: Saudi Arabia’s intelligence chief told European diplomats this weekend that he plans to scale back cooperating with the US to arm and train Syrian rebels in protest against Washington’s policy in the region, participants in the meeting said.

Prince Bandar Bin Sultan Al Saud’s move increases tensions in a growing dispute between the US and one of its closest Arab allies over Syria, Iran and Egypt policies. It follows Saudi Arabia’s surprise decision on Friday to renounce a seat on the United Nations Security Council.

The Saudi government, after preparing and campaigning for the seat for a year, cited what it said was the council’s ineffectiveness in resolving the Israeli-Palestinian and Syrian conflicts.

Diplomats here said Prince Bandar, who is leading the kingdom’s efforts to fund, train and arm rebels fighting Syrian President Bashar Al Assad, invited a Western diplomat to the Saudi Red Sea city of Jeddah over the weekend to voice Riyadh’s frustration with the Obama administration and its regional policies, including the decision not to bomb Syria in response to its alleged use of chemical weapons in August.

1. They'll get over it. They may not want to, but they will.

Hasn't Bandar gotten old...and fat? He must be terribly frustrated that he doesn't have his pushover relationship with Porgie to fall back on, anymore, I'm guessing.

Bottom line: Bandar ain't the boss of Saud--he very well might be shooting off his attitudinal mouth.

US Secretary of State John Kerry met in Paris on Monday with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al Faisal. Officials familiar with the meeting said Kerry urged the Saudis to reconsider their UN decision but said Prince Saud didn’t raise Prince Bandar’s concerns. Officials said this may suggest that there are divisions within the monarchy about how to pressure the US to play a more hands-on role.

He just doesn't "own the road" like he used to back when he was Saudi Ambassador to USA.

If McCain or rMoney had made it into the WH, life would be so much easier for him, but alas, the Democratic ticket won, and he doesn't get younger with the years!

Damn the bad luck for poor little Bandar Bush....

No one is going to do for them the way the US has, ( weapons ) even without a Republican..they know that
and they'll as you say, get over it.

I find the fact that they spent tons of money to get a seat at the UNSC and now refuse it claiming they're
too principled to the cause of the Palestinians....which is bullshit. If they had accepted they could
have been a voice of reform but that would have meant being confronted with their own horrific human rights abuses.

I guess they believe their own PR but who else does? snip* With the current continuation of the Palestinian cause without a just and lasting solution for 65 years, which resulted in several wars threatened international peace and security is irrefutable evidence and proof of the Security Council's inability to carry out its duties and assume its responsibilities.

The failure of the Security Council to make the Middle East a free zone of all weapons of mass destruction, whether because of its inability to subdue the nuclear programs of all countries in the region, without exception, to the international control and inspection or to prevent any country in the region from possessing nuclear weapons, is another irrefutable evidence and proof of its inability to carry out its duties and hold its responsibilities.

Allowing the ruling regime in Syria to kill and burn its people by the chemical weapons, while the world stands idly, without applying deterrent sanctions against Damascus regime, is also irrefutable evidence and proof of the inability of the Security Council to carry out its duties and responsibilities.

Get rid of al-Assad (and his cretinous brothers), leave the two vice presidents to share power, and send in the UN blue helmets as "overseers" to tamp down the drama and get everyone back to equilibrium.

Then figure out what kind of election process they want to have, and, in due course, go for it.

The Saudis are always very cautious about what side they butter their bread on--and they're very careful to not drop the toast, too!
