Warren backs medical marijuana ‘with the right restrictions’
Speaking with Boston talk radio station WTKK-FM, Warren recalled holding her fathers hand as he died from cancer and explained there was some conversation about whether medical marijuana would have helped him.
It puts me in a position to say, if theres something a physician can prescribe that can help someone who is suffering, I am in favor of that, she said. I want to make sure theyve got the right restrictions, it should be like getting any other prescription drug, that theres careful control over it. But I think its really hard to watch someone suffer that you love.
Voters in Massachusetts will decide whether to legalize medical marijuana on Election Day. Warren previously said she opposes outright legalization of marijuana.

(6,436 posts)Im not sure what this picture implies. Seems oddly racist. Does Flav even smoke weed? He doesn't rap about it. Many intelligent, creative, sharp people smoke marijuana. If you want to see a drug take a toll on the brain examine alcohol.

(6,436 posts)plenty of people who seem to handle it okay (although I don't think I'd want them flying a plane I was on or cashing my check), but others who don't know who they are, where they are or what they are doing when 'on' it.

(10,849 posts)not marijuana. That is ridiculous.
In the 1950s they interviewed juvenile delinquents who were committing crimes. At the time there was an uproar from religious people over the content of comic books which often had political themes and horror/witchcraft stories which they wanted to stamp out. They asked these juveniles a number of questions and discovered that most of them had read comic books and, thus, according to their reasoning comic books caused crime and they needed to be censored. That is how the Comics Code Authority got established, censoring comics up through the 1990s. Never mind that those same kids all ate food, breathed air and attended school...it had to be the comics. The same reasoning that labeled comic book readers is used by many to label pot smokers. Let's face it, there are lots of stupid people out there but the majority of people under the age of 50 smoke pot and shouldn't be scapegoated...people are stupid on their own and in many cases marijuana would probably help them improve.

(582 posts)I really thought Warren was smarter than this.It seems so many politicians either don't know what the heck they are talking about,or have another agenda (or master).
No offense, but if she isn't more educated on this topic than to make a statement like that, then I have reservations about her leadership abilities.

(582 posts)but as people who profess the desire to lead, they should be listening to what their constituency is saying.Obviously they are not listening, and therefore should be discounted when it comes to serving in the public good.

(90,061 posts)Use was unrestricted for thousands of years all over the world and nobody even noticed. You can't say that about alcohol or tobacco or much of anything else I can think of. They hate it because is it cheap and ubiquitous, and the only way to make a buck off it is to prohibit it or use it for rope.

As with anything you ingest, dosage is everything as far as what the effects are. Too little you get nothing. Too much, you're sick or dead.
But hemp, as chemicals taken to get high or get well go, is amazingly non-toxic. Edit: in fact it's wierd that Anslinger settled on what is probably the least pernicious intoxicant people commonly use. All the rest will kill you if you overdo it, and some of them the difference betweed high and dead is not large.

(6,436 posts)people function in daily situations. I've seen many friends who weren't in any kind of shape to drive a car, fly a plane or just do there jobs. Fortunately, usually people are aware of this and just stay holed up somewhere - well, they're usually enjoying their reverie so much that they don't feel a need to go anywhere.

self-medications that are more dangerous than
cannabis.
Many who smoke regularly function perfectly well.
Some can function normally for the first time.
One friend from a very poor ghetto told me that
it was only when he smoked pot that he could sit
and read a book. But every day when he walked
out his door to go to work, crack dealers greeted
him. Good cannabis wasn't available.
For many people who have lost the ability
to feel, or who are afraid to feel, or to look at
themselves; many who are deeply depressed
and unable to see beauty anywhere,
cannabis has enormous healing possibilities.
There's a small number of people who probably
should never use pot. I know first-hand it
can exaggerate or accentuate panic attacks or
hallucinations, IF a person is already on that
edge. If they're not, pot's unlikely to take you
there, my personal opnion. Pot is what took me
through the terrors, and out the other side.
Back in the 60's, my brother convinced my mother
to smoke some pot. For the first time since
we'd known her, she stopped talking.
She lay down on the couch & listened to Mozart
for a very long time. She said I have never heard
music this way before. Every note.
Pot is also both a diagnostic and educational
medicine, in my experience. Often under the
influence, a person can pinpoint the source of
their bodily pain or tension, or even of emotional
pain. It can also trigger profound emotional
release. It can naturally & spontaneously urge
the body and mind to do healing activities such
as dance, sing, move, breathe, stretch, eat, weep,
make art, and best-known effect of all, Laugh.
Cannabis can trigger insight, especially I think
into other people, our common humanity,
and of course a familiar joyful experience called
"don't worry be happy." As I'm sure you know,
happiness leads to all sorts of benefits, bodily
and otherwise.
Marijuana is a primarily a drug of peace, of
non violence, unlike alcohol or cocaine.
This is documented in more primitive societies
but I'm sorry I don't have a link on hand.
As far as people not knowing who they are,
under the influence of marijuana...?
I've been there many, many times. I love that
place.
Who am I? just me. alive, here, in this moment,
on an exquisite planet, breathing, feeling,
enjoying my existence.
My biggest reason for supporting pot, medical and
for recreation, is that it helps people rediscover
the normal attractions of childhood. The fascination
& appreciation of simple things. The creative and
playful. The silly.
We creatures on this planet are starving. Not for
food, but for fun.
