MLK Jr.: A transformative figure of faith, leadership and courage/Dream lives in holiday-eve vigil

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a transformative figure of faith, leadership and courage

Two generations have come into the world since Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was struck down by an assassin's bullet. His profound role in U.S. history, and the difference he made for those who followed, no doubt seem remote.

Imagine trying to remind all those caught up in the social exuberance and global tensions of 1968 to pause and reflect on the sacrifices made by others four decades earlier.

This holiday, which honors his birth Jan. 15, 1929, recognizes one of the most transformative figures in American history. Through his religious faith, personal sacrifice and courageous leadership, King challenged the nation to live up to the promise of liberty and justice for all.

Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream lives in holiday-eve vigil

Hundreds of Occupy Wall Street protesters joined members of Al Sharpton's National Action Network in freezing temperatures for a Harlem vigil on the eve of Martin Luther King Day.

"Before he died, he was going to occupy Washington, D.C.," said Brooklyn artist Lori LaRoe, whose painting of King was carried by marchers. "We're a small part of his legacy."
