As a lifelong educator and as part of a military family, the way we reach out to military children in our classrooms has been especially close to my heart. So when first lady Michelle Obama and I started Joining Forces, our initiative to encourage all Americans to take action to find ways to honor and support our service men and women, veterans and military families, I knew part of what I would focus on was raising awareness about the military child experience in the classroom.
