A Star Player Accused, and a Flawed Rape Investigation

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2014/04/16/sports/errors-in-inquiry-on-rape-allegations-against-fsu-jamies-winston.html?smid=fb-nytimes&WT.z_sma=US_ASP_20140416&bicmp=AD&bicmlukp=WT.mc_id&bicmst=1388552400000&bicmet=1420088400000&_r=1

Excellent in-depth report on this investigation. Long read, but worth it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tallahassee, Fla. — Early on the morning of Dec. 7, 2012, a freshman at Florida State University reported that she had been raped by a stranger somewhere off campus after a night of drinking at a popular Tallahassee bar called Potbelly’s.

As she gave her account to the police, several bruises began to appear, indicating recent trauma. Tests would later find semen on her underwear.

For nearly a year, the events of that evening remained a well-kept secret until the woman’s allegations burst into the open, roiling the university and threatening a prized asset: Jameis Winston, one of the marquee names of college football.

Three weeks after Mr. Winston was publicly identified as the suspect, the storm had passed. The local prosecutor announced that he lacked the evidence to charge Mr. Winston with rape. The quarterback would go on to win the Heisman Trophy and lead Florida State to the national championship.

not know. but EVERYTHING points to him doing it and all the powers that be made sure he got away with rape.

so in my book, this is another privileged, entitled to rape.

the rapist is responsible for the rape. all the people that did not do their job, made excusing, contribute to the rape culture that allows the rapist to not take responsibility for his rape.

...did not get the Heisman. A more deserving team did not win the national championship.

Because character is not what any of this is about. It is about winning at all costs. If we have to bury crimes in order to win, we will bury crimes. If we have to harbor criminals in our midst, and call them heroes, and carry them on our shoulders cheering wildly, we will do that so that we can have a trophy in our trophy case.

Officer Angulo did a horrible job with this case. If he had done a better job it is likely he would have been able to find out what actually happened that night. I would; however, like to know if Officer Angulo is connected to the Florida State University booster program. Did Angulo handle this case in such a sloppy manner because he is lazy, or because he was doing a favor to Florida State football?
