Some more thoughts on the Bundy standoff

... I fully support Mr. Bundy’s right to express his views. I also feel that the question of the proper role of government is one that is important to all of us. I also acknowledge that conscientious people have a wide variety of legitimate views on the subject.

However, I struggle to get my head around the notion that someone who doesn’t accept the authority of the U.S. government nevertheless continues to live here and indeed sets himself up as a patriotic citizen. I wonder which parts of being an American he subscribes to. Clearly obeying the laws is not on that list. How about serving in the military? Being that Mr. Bundy is older than 65, is he receiving Social Security or Medicare, subsidized and administered by the federal government? Does he drive on Interstate 15, a federal interstate highway? Did any of his children receive college loans? Does he benefit from any of the services of Clark County that receive federal funding, such as anti-terrorist training for the police? You get the drift.

In particular, I was appalled to see that some of Mr. Bundy’s supporters had the audacity to wave the American flag while espousing armed rebellion against it. Huh? Aside from being a direct insult to those who have served this great country in any number of ways, it was nonsensical and illogical. If you don’t believe in the country, don’t sully its most beloved symbol. If you refuse to abide by the decisions of this country’s justice system, then you can’t wrap yourself in its flag. Feel free to wave the Nevada flag if that is where your allegiance lies ...

My point here is simply to say that people are starting down a very slippery slope when they assert that they have rights to land because Grandpa was here first. Because he wasn’t. And don’t wave my flag.

there were some actual reporters out there. You'd think someone would want to get this story. I haven't seen any first hand accounts.

They aren't bright/sensitive enough to perceive cognitive dissonance? Their minds are hopelessly clouded
by hatred, fear, ignorance, and wacky beliefs?

Beats the hell out of me, really.

lands or are they on Bundy's property? I read that the rumors that they were stopping motorists trying to get home was, in fact, just rumor, and that they were stopping people going onto Bundy's property.

If they are not on the government's land and they are just hanging out on Bundy's land, I say let them. If he wants that crew as his houseguests, it's on him. It can't be very pleasant. I feel certain that they don't flush reliably.

Arrest anyone who threatens or acts against a citizen outside of his land, but if they are on his land there isn't much that can be done.

Of course a nice side effect of this would be if Nevada residents see the light about the need for gun control laws...

That said, the article was great. And I agree: "Don't wave my flag."
