Obama's new Iraq strategy is just a cover for expanding his worldwide secret wars

Obama's new Iraq strategy is just a cover for expanding his worldwide secret wars

{snip}

"Rather than try to play Whac-a-Mole wherever these terrorist organizations may pop up," Obama said, "what we have to do is to be able to build effective partnerships, make sure that they have capacity." And he may well try to form sometimes odious partnerships, but for the moment, Whac-a-Mole is indeed what Obama's been doing, whether nabbing terrorists in Libya or this week's attacks in Pakistan's tribal areas. And there's no reason to think Obama won't use his mallet all over the vanishing geography of Iraq.

Just look at the one concrete model Obama cited in questions after delivering his five-point Iraq plan on Thursday: Yemen.

We have been able to help to develop [the Yemeni government's] capacities without putting large numbers of US troops on the ground at the same time as we've got enough CT – or counterterrorism – capabilities that we're able to go after folks that might try to hit our embassy or might be trying to export terrorism into Europe or the United States.

That "CT" capability, of course, includes the waging of an American covert war in Yemen, which includes drone strikes against militants conducted under a broad view of the post-9/11 authorization for military force against Al Qaida. Note Obama's use of the word "large", suggesting that even his model country has seen some American boots on the ground in the form of covert special operations soldiers.

Sounds like the Cheney/Rumsfled plan of whack-a-mole in the mid 2000's. n/t Mika Jun 2014 #1

"... there's no reason to think Obama won't use his mallet all over the vanishing geography of Iraq."

There are three:

There's no public will.
He's not predisposed to it.
It won't work.

Other than that, fantastic derp!

In fact, I even read the whole editorial. It's a sad compilation of conjecture, fantasy, parsing and presupposition meant to convey the certitude that Obama is bent on Mideast destruction. Except that he's not, nor will he.

Dull fiction.

There is no drone assassination program across an indefinite part of the world (except, of course, w.r.t. the key essence: they can't fight back).

"Friends of Syria" only funds, gives aid and moral support to and through proxies military capabilities to, "moderate jihadists". It has to be true: I read how it is true right here on DU, in a thread that explained how the USA has no moral culpability, because George W. Bush is gone and we have a new forward-looking administration.

wars.

It used to be popular here. Heck, there used to be a pretty strong anti-war contingent here.

"Stop the War was founded in September 2001, in the weeks following 9/11 when George W. Bush announced the "war on terror". It has since been dedicated to ending the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, bringing the troops home and forcing the British government to change its disastrous foreign policies. We have initiated many campaigns around these issues and are also committed to opposing sanctions and military attacks on Iran, supporting Palestinian rights, opposing racism and defending civil liberties.

Stop the War has organised around 40 national demonstrations, including the largest protests ever held in Britain, most memorably when up to 2 million gathered on London's streets on 15 February 2003. Other events have included thousands of public meetings across the country, direct action in the run up to the war in 2003, including walkouts from schools, colleges and workplaces, two People's Assemblies, international peace conferences, vigils, lobbies of Parliament and anti-war cultural events.

We are open to affiliation by supporting organisations and individual membership for all those who support our aims as set out in our constitution."
