The problem is that Curley and Schultz and Spanier had covered up an earlier accusation against Sandusky from 1998, so simply telling them was not enough. Paterno claimed he didn't know anything about the earlier investigation, and we'll never know whether or not he was lying.

power and hangs on too long after their time has passed.

If he had stepped down last year his legacy would have mostly remained in tact despite his not realizing that it was well past his time.
