My Dad's family were a real mix of religions, due to falling away from Catholicism a couple of generations before it was common. I grew up knowing a lot of religions: we had Protestants , including evangelicals in my Mom's family who would show to pray for us. We had Jewish conversions. Also Catholic conversions. Basically my family was all screwed up religiously. and when all was said and done, the best way to grow up. For some reason (in the sixties) I was mostly dating Catholic boys and generally suspect of leading them astray by their Mommas, who were sure that they'd knock me up and screw up their educations. The fallen away Catholic boy I married (in a civil ceremony) had the most wonderful, liberal parents that I could ever have asked for. They just wanted the best girl for him. Twenty years later he left me for a much younger woman and it was difficult, to say the least. His family were on my side, treating me like the daughter. Meanwhile our daughter had gone through the whole Catholic induction. She'd entered public school after four years of Montessori where her classmates were a revelation of nationalities and religions. When she felt a lack of "church going" among her public school friends, her Dad, who denied Catholicism for years, said "he'd want her to be Catholic" WTF? She went through the whole deal while he was having an affair and trying to write off a marriage because it wasn't in the Catholic church. The other woman being divorced turned out to be a bigger detriment than our civil 20 year marriage w/ child in the eyes of the Church. Meanwhile our daughter goes to Mass on Christmas Eve and the Easter Holidays.
