(10,893 posts)I tried to sit through it myself, but I was unable to make it through 2 minutes without doing a facepalm about how simple these people are. I was literally sitting at my screen, aghast at how many people in this country who think like this.

Some younger folks on this thread might not remember him, but he would've made David Duke look liberal. And those sorry excuses for human beings aren't just in the South, either. You wouldn't have to turn over a field full of rocks to find more of them than you care to think about.
I like the picture I saw elsewhere of a young lady on the beach at sunrise, her arms outstretched as she says, "I love it when I wake up in the morning and Barack Obama's president!" Me too, though we still have so far to go. I can't think of any era in history when I would prefer to have been born. We've seen so many wonders, with still more to come.

(8,821 posts)A Romney administration would have made half of our country feel like illegals in their native land. It would have truly been awful.
I'm not sure if President Obama can save the Voting Rights Act as we know it, but at least he will be on the side of democracy and inclusion, not championing oligarchy and voter suppression.

The PBS special sounds fascinating as well. I will look for it.
It was a brave experiment: After dying his skin with walnut husks and shaving his head so as to look like a bald African-American, a white man hitch-hiked across the deep South in the early 1960's. His despair at the end is deeply moving. It's been decades since I read the book but that part I remember very well. He learned a great deal, to say the least!
IrishAyes
(6,151 posts)And he also taught a great deal. You'd need to do a PBS search for the show's title; I don't remember it exactly. But it's there. The series on Frederick Douglass was well done also, like everything else I've ever seen on PBS. They might've laid an egg somewhere, but I never saw one.

(482 posts)who rants just like this guy. Then he breaks into scripture after calling Obama a "spear chucker" (that is the least offensive word that he uses)...yes he uses worst. As soon as he walks into our yard my wife goes in the house. One day she about tore his eyeballs out. Yes, they hate each other.
The guy writes editorial letters in the paper about God, religion...frickin hypocrite. He is one reason why I am now a full blown atheist.
... don't blame the song when the choir's offkey. Liberal churches were a major moving force behind the early Civil Rights struggle. Dr. King himself was my favorite Baptist next to Vernon Johns. From my own denomination, the Jesuits and Claretians worked for social justice, and I knew several prominent clerics well in that day. We're not all like your idiot neighbor.
When I first moved to this flyspeck little town, my Northside Neighbor was one of the paramilitary alleged 'patriots' who like to play soldier in the woods. He gave me all sorts of hell, partly because I committed the unpardonable sin of outbidding him for this house. His father-in-law happened to be mayor at the time and had appointed the local police chief, so Northside Neighbor called the cops on me every time I blinked. They were at my door almost every week.
When the mayor's office changed hands, so did the police chief's position, and they got tired pretty quick of running out here at his every beck and call. I think a lot of the present holders of those two offices because they know I never bite first. When the rabid wingnut bus driver filed a false police report claiming I'd carried a gun on board and threatened everyone, the police chief took it with a grain of salt and rushed right over almost 2 full days later to ask me about it. Just for the sake of formality! I wrote a rebuttal for the record and publicized the bus gang's lowdown behavior in the local press.
Everybody for miles around knows what lowlifes infest that rural regional minibus, and not just from my own experiences either. I could've withstood the insanity and criminal behavior for the sake of transportation, and did for several years - but what bothered me most was having them scream their imaginary superiority in my face. They called me unrepeatable names constantly, and I eventually referred to them as Hell Spawn. First time they heard that came as quite a shock to them, and they were soooo offended!
BTW, Northside Neighbor eventually gave up and moved to the other side of town in a self righteous huff. But everybody knows who won our little turf war, and it wasn't him. After so many years of hell from these people, when President Obama won re-election I confess that when I saw the bus approaching my house one day I ran out in the street, jumped in the air, and blew them the loudest rasberry I could. Then I ran back in the yard because that damned bus looked like it was picking up speed. Somebody's tires squealed!
That got most of it out of my system, though, and I've behaved fairly well ever since. At worst when I see that bunch shopping in one of the few local stores, I restrain myself to a comparatively ladylike, barely perceptible flutter of chickenwings. If you didn't know any better, you'd think I'd developed a sudden rash on each armpit. But blink and you'd miss it. I'm not one to rub anything in.

(8,821 posts)No one gets that enraged about something like the national debt, what bullshit. Did anyone march screaming in the streets about the national debt while George W. Bush was creating most of it? Of course they didn't, and that is not what these people are angry about now. These people hate, and I do mean 'hate,' that an African American now lives in the White House.
I know what racist rage looks like, and that is exactly what I see in these distorted, hate-filled faces. It's sickening in so many ways, but that is the rage they are expressing.

(8,219 posts)that when the economic and social structures break down, the populace "vomits up" (Hedges' words) people like that guy screaming about dead Communists (and others there who are not so vociferous, but are just as dangerous because of their profound ignorance).
Anyone who believes that if austerity bites us hard enough in the ass, those folks will come to their senses is dangerously delusional.
The people in that video are not operating out of the cerebral cortex. The propagandists like Beck, and others, are appealing to the primitive brain concerned with fight, flight, fear, and raw survival.
When push comes to shove, they are the ones who will be gunning (literally) for anyone perceived to be liberal.

I encounter Libertarian types on a regular basis, and they're the more benign form, if you can imagine it, of the nuttery displayed in the above video.
The people interviewed in that video can't even support their political viewpoints, e.g., the two young women who had to ask their mother why they liked Glen Beck.
And Libertarians seem completely unable to imagine the reality of the society they claim to want to construct.
Jeezus! Where do you start?

As to where to start, start where you are. And you can't afford to worry too much about whether it looks like you're making any headway, because we can't always see that. But you still have to keep plugging away. And I don't hold myself up as any kind of role model, because truth to tell, when push shoves hard long enough, I succumb and show them up for the crazy fools they are. Would you believe that crazy bus driver runs out of the store and hides on his bus if he sees me now? He claims it's a matter of (purely imaginary) honor, but the fool's half scared to death because he thinks I'm crazier than he is.
Maybe that's a tossup!

(12,287 posts)They are behaving like this because they "don't want any black people to tell them what to do". I don't recall his name, but he said it very clearly. I could almost hear the "they are beneath us and can't rule us" thought pattern in it...

(6,151 posts)So glad I finally watched this BEFORE breakfast.
Even with President Obama's second term safely underway, I kept putting off watching the video. Where I retired, I have to live with these people! Unfortunately for them, they have to live with me too, regardless of the tight circle they try to draw around their 'safe little haven' of conservatism.
To me it represents hell on earth. How can people live consumed with so much blind, idiotic hatred? How would you like to have them in your face all the time? If you don't believe they're truly dangerous and demented, look at that guy from Nicaragua threatening to kill the interviewer and throw him in the river.
While I realize most barking dogs don't bite, rabid ones do. The main reason I've survived here for over 7 years is because they know from experience that I bite back, sometimes even hard. The two chows let me sleep easy while they were alive, and now they're gone the delicate balance of power has so far remained secure.
You wouldn't wonder if maybe I'm a little hypersensitive if it was your own neck on the line. They know they can't reach President Obama himself, so they try to make do with one of his Yellow Dog Democrat supporters. Some tradesmen have refused the chance to bid on major renovation projects on this place amounting to several thousands of dollars, and they weren't shy about telling me why either. One guy who doesn't want me in his store (especially when I wear Democrat gear) simply closes shop the minute I step foot in the door.
So believe me, I treasure the comparative few who aren't so punitive. It's been an education for me in so many ways, and oddly enough increased my self confidence because if I'd known completely what I'd be getting into when I moved here, you couldn't have given me a house in this town for free. Now that we're pretty much stuck with each other, I've learned more survival skills. I can control my own temper better and unleash it more at my own rare choosing than theirs.
So to a degree I celebrate the strength this general battering has encouraged in me, and I count each and every tiny (but growing) social grace extended in my direction by the nicer element as a mutual victory. Maybe on my 100th birthday, I'll run for mayor! I once settled for several years near a little town in Southern California when I had a horse ranch, and those people kept me elected to a lesser local office even though I was the newcomer and you couldn't convince them for love or money that I'm not an undercover commie. But it was a whole different world there and then. I never quite appreciated how they spoiled me.
