Ron Finley: A guerilla gardener in South Central LA

TEDtalksDirector· Published on Mar 6, 2013

Ron Finley plants vegetable gardens in South Central LA -- in abandoned lots, traffic medians, along the curbs. Why? For fun, for defiance, for beauty and to offer some alternative to fast food in a community where "the drive-thrus are killing more people than the drive-bys."

TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Look for talks on Technology, Entertainment and Design -- plus science, business, global issues, the arts and much more.

This morning I read the article about the man dying in court battling Wells Fargo, and despaired. Then I clicked on this - hope restored, happy again. I love Ron Finley.

It's a low-rumbling movement, that barely can be heard. They began to spring up spontaneously in decaying, abandoned urban areas around the country. It's completely organic and non-hierarchical.

- It may just work since it seems to be modeled after Nature, with a high agri-tech bias.....

Ron is doing the right thing in the right place. Imagine 5% of LAers joining him...yeah...and then spreading throughout our Nation. Gangster Growers, ok.

My other favorite was from Allan Savory, who gave a talk during the same session (and whose permaculture message ties in nicely with Finley's). Made a thread on it over in Environment & Energy:

(might also throw it up in Video & Multimedia, just to spread the word)

"Over 6,000 pounds of food per year, on 1/10 acre located just 15 minutes from downtown Los Angeles. The Dervaes family grows over 400 species of plants, 4,300 pounds of vegetable food, 900 chicken and 1,000 duck eggs, 25 lbs of honey, plus seasonal fruits throughout the year."
