TEDtalksDirector· Published on Mar 6, 2013
Ron Finley plants vegetable gardens in South Central LA -- in abandoned lots, traffic medians, along the curbs. Why? For fun, for defiance, for beauty and to offer some alternative to fast food in a community where "the drive-thrus are killing more people than the drive-bys."

(1,395 posts)This morning I read the article about the man dying in court battling Wells Fargo, and despaired. Then I clicked on this - hope restored, happy again. I love Ron Finley.

(1,395 posts)Very impressed with Will Allen, too. Ordered the book.
It's a low-rumbling movement, that barely can be heard. They began to spring up spontaneously in decaying, abandoned urban areas around the country. It's completely organic and non-hierarchical.
- It may just work since it seems to be modeled after Nature, with a high agri-tech bias.....

(1,230 posts)My other favorite was from Allan Savory, who gave a talk during the same session (and whose permaculture message ties in nicely with Finley's). Made a thread on it over in Environment & Energy:
