Who was right about DOMA

Video here: http://video.msnbc.msn.com/the-last-word/51367341

Tonight on 'The Last Word' during the Rewrite segment Lawrence O'Donnell showed a whole bunch of old clips from 1996 of Senate and House floor speeches prior to the DOMA vote. Video of the full segment on the link above.

Steve Gunderson

-snip-

In 1994, Gunderson was outed as gay on the House floor by conservative then-representative Bob Dornan (R-CA) during a debate over federal funding for gay-friendly curricula, making him one of the first openly gay members of Congress and the first openly gay Republican representative.

In 1996, Gunderson was the only Republican in Congress to vote against the Defense of Marriage Act, and he has been a vocal supporter of gay rights causes since leaving Congress.

Great Rewrite!!! Not surprised that Ted Kennedy voted against DOMA but was surprised that only one Republican Steve Gunderson also voted against it. All of these elected officials who were strong & stood up & voted against DOMA were Profiles in Courage!!!
