(14,400 posts)completely changed my views on gun control.
If you need an extended magazine for anything legal, it means your either a lousy or lazy shooter.
When I saw my daughter afraid to go to school the following Monday because of what happened 30 miles away my heart broke.

It's nice to know "Don't be an inhuman psychopath" doesn't need to be spelled out in the TOS.

(10,237 posts)...F**K the NRA!
If I said what I really think of those people I'd probably get banned after nearly 10 years here. However, as a husband and a father of a newly minted teen (13 on Easter Sunday), I'm DOG TIRED of that horrible organization's sacrificing innocent people, especially children, on their alter of all things guns. I'm also tired of the notion that the best way to solve any gun issue is to throw more guns at the problem.
NRA? Screw 'em all!
PEACE!

(10,237 posts)My comments would have mostly related to the NRA's leaders having a sexual relationship with their guns. They probably love their guns more than their wives.

(John Greenleaf Whittier)
Taken from his poem Maud Muller (1856), but a feeling we can all relate to and especially tragic/sad having to do with the loss of a child.

(4,589 posts)All the heart wrenching stories in the world will not overcome the obscene, religious-like obsession with guns and the Second Amendment that rules this sick country. I am completely disgusted with our society and its valuation of gun rights over human life.
The horrible, brutal truth is that politicians either agree that guns rights triumph over everything or just don't have the guts to vote against those who insist it is their God-given right to own any firearm in existence and that any limit on guns and bullets means an end to freedom.
All the heart wrenching stories in the world will not overcome the obscene, religious-like obsession with <getting reelected> that rules this sick country. I am completely disgusted with our society and its valuation of <money> over human life.

I have heard that over 90% of all groups surveyed, including NRA members, are in favor of at least background checks before being able to buy a gun.
Our politicians are so afraid of the NRA they are not willing to even consider doing something that 90% of America favors!
You can't get 90% agreement the sky is blue, fer chrissakes!
I am so thankful I'm almost 60 with no children. The future for this planet is Orwell-squared bleak, when you consider corporate fascism and the end-of-life-as-we-know-it consequences of global climate change. I guess corporations plan to make big bucks in the future providing us with air conditioners that can convert 180F outdoor temps to a more moderate 110F inside or something?

(29,095 posts)and I've got to fist bump you on the age thing...I'm 63 and feel exactly the same.
I'm only happy that I grew up and lived in such a different America, where we had no
"homeless problem", where union jobs were plentiful, and the largest middle class
in the world, plus the largest percentage of college grads..Yeah, there were problems,
but they seemed to be at least acknowledged and getting worked on. As my spouse
and I have said, it was a time when people actually looked forward to things getting better.
This was a time when moms COULD stay home to raise their kids, if they wanted, because a single
blue collar worker, like my dad, could support a decent lifestyle for his family.
He didn't live long enough to see the Right take over to the extent they have, although he was disappointed
in the Dems as early as the mid-nineties. He was a strong, union supporting, FDR Dem
and he thought they'd gone quite soft. He detested Reagan, and my sister and I often
spoke of how ballistic he'd have been over Bush/Cheney.

(15,555 posts)and I've always believed and said that Reagan was the beginning of the end for our country what with all the emphasis on greed/status/money/materialism/stock prices above all else. That is NOT the most important nor meaningful measure of a great country.
whathehell
(29,095 posts)and you are absolutely correct about Reagan. When I got a rare phone call answered
on C-Span a few years ago, with the topic being the crashing economy, I said that it was the result of
"30 years of Reagonomics"....That got me a sour look from Greta, or Gretchen, or
whatever her name is, but so many of these "kids" were raised on the St. Ronnie
myth, and have no idea how MUCH better this country was before he came along.
There are many, for instance, who thought we "always" had a homeless problem.
They weren't cognizant back in the early to mid eighties when that started.

(10,597 posts)A vote on the assault rifles. And a vote on the over-sized magazines (or whatever they are called.)
Then everyone will know who is who. Who supports the unreasonable NRA and who supports the stopping of the slaughter of innocents all over this country.
And when midterm elections come in 2014, let the people speak by voting their NRA supporting arses out of there.
Deep13
(39,154 posts)Perhaps instead of figuring out what "assault weapon" means or deciding how big is too big for magazines, we should just say no semi-auto detachable rifle magazines.
Still, most gun violence is committed with pistols.

I believe a five or seven round capacity is very reasonable. It's also critical that we also prohibit possession of these types of magazines, because there are enough out there to last 300 years.
And yes, I've owned firearms my whole life and still do.

(1,296 posts)3D printing may make magazine bans ineffective. Other home fabrication options are probably available too.
Maybe what we really need is to disallow magazines from being readily detachable.
SunSeeker
(51,726 posts)First, I think this 3D printer crap is one of the crazier gungeoneer anti-gun control talking points I've heard. But even if you could really "print" magazines, why can't that still be illegal? Private printing of money is a felony. So should the sale or "printing" of magazines that hold more than 6 rounds.
Mr.Pain
(52 posts)I am familiar with these weapons and in doing the math, (154 shots), he dropped 5 magazines and inserted the 6th before killing himself with a Glock pistol. In all of this horrendous deed my biggest question is why? Here is an excerpt from an article I read about what police had found when they asked that very question.
((
Adam was a deranged adolescent who was obsessed with violent video games such as Call of Duty, and it is believed that his reason for shooting at the school was because he wanted live out a video game in real life. He had an extensive hit list, according to a law officer.))
We were told (Lanza) had around 500 people on this sheet, a law enforcement veteran told The New York Post. Names and the number of people killed and the weapons that were used, even the precise make and model of the weapons. It had to have taken years. It sounded like a doctoral thesis, that was the quality of the research.
We keep calling them mass murderers, the veteran cop said. But there should be a new way of referring to them: Glory killers.
They dont believe this was just a spreadsheet. They believe it was a score sheet, he continued. This was the work of a video gamer, and that it was his intent to put his own name at the very top of that list. They believe that he picked an elementary school because he felt it was a point of least resistance, where he could rack up the greatest number of kills. Thats what (the Connecticut police) believe.
They believe that (Adam) believed that it was the way to pick up the easiest points. Its why he didnt want to be killed by law enforcement. In the code of a gamer, even a deranged gamer like this little b**tard, if somebody else kills you, they get your points. They believe thats why he killed himself.
This is truly shocking information. Adam is known to have been unhinged, and that he was addicted to playing violent games, so this could finally be an explanation as to why he would commit such a horrendous crime.
This is from the Hollywood life website, below is the link.
http://hollywoodlife.com/2013/03/18/adam-lanza-motive-sandy-hook-elementary-school-glory-killer-video-gamer/
Even if congress wont do anything about assault rifle availability, or magazine capacity, could we at least get something done about violent video games and the glorification of murder and violence in Hollywood?
1 dead child is too many.
"If those magazines had held ten rounds, forcing the shooter to reload at least six more times would our children be alive today?"
Unfortunately, that wouldn't boost the odds much when you have a KILLER who has plenty of time to plan and practice.
Upon further investigation I read that he was on his sixth magazine and still had three left, however none of the magazines were completely empty... (just trying to get into this little devils head here), seconds count, if you drop the magazine without emptying it you still have a round in the chamber, no need to cycle the weapons action to retrieve a new round from the clip. An idea which would fit into a maximum body count plot.

(802 posts)And promptly got the smack-down right back from other D.U.er's. It might have been bad timing, because that nutcase head of the NRA brought up the violent-videogame desensitization issue as well-- it's probably the only point he makes I tend to agree with.
Fuck the NRA. They jumped completely off the gun safety course into the "arm everybody" crap that has bred the kind of nutcases: "Gub-mint's the beast, Obama's the 666 and they're all comin' to take mah guns"-- I'm not kidding-- check it out yourself:

To which I reply "post your address please. I'll send the agents to come get guns out of your insane hands post haste"..
