they proclaimed a need for total control in order to restore the country. During the Weimar Republic the economy had collapsed (not owing to the Republic but due to WWI war reparations and the collapse of the global economy), there was high unemployment, hyperinflation roared, starvation and death were not uncommon and there was civil unrest.

The Nazis answer was totalitarianism that was wrapped in German nationalism. This all sounds too familiar after 9-11 with the most ardent supporters of these spying programs, total war, etc. wrapping themselves in the American flag and labeling anyone who didn't support their programs as traitors and un-American.

We are in a de facto totalitarian state. The 1% control the economy and jobs and through their purchased elected officials, they control policy. I am sure many of the 1% are happy all the information is available. Given the apparent acquiescence of most of the telephone and internet companies to federal requests, the kind of corporate-government morph that was fascism has indeed been achieved.
