"Mankind has the true religion...............thousands of 'em."

Edited to add: Actually my post was intended to be in support of the good Bishop's words. There are many paths to God, however we interpret that reality.

If you say it that it sounds stupid..

And you can read "symbolically eat his flesh" as use substitution magic to preform a cannibalistic partial deification of yourself.

brainwashed zombies.

No thinking...no independent thoughts...no listening to anyone. Just cough over your money and do what they say.

Oh yes and keep that FEAR in mind all the time.

...I've always felt it was all laughable.

He is absolutely right. Religions are all about control. Christains and Muslims are mostly about controlling sexuality. It is an obsession with them. The Hindu cast structure controls society. It keeps everyone in their place.
No one controls God and access to the afterlife. Hell is a fabrication. God would not create such a place. He has no need for vengence. Good and evil change with every society. It is primarily a device to determine who gets fed and who doesn't.

in his answer to what is enlightenment
He said enlightenment is man's escape from his self imposed immaturity. Immaturity is the unwillingness to use your own brain, it is self imposed not because he is unable to think for himself but because he is too lazy to do so. The theme of enlightenment is to think for yourself.

It is much longer than that and is a good read

and fantasies that the Christian religion is based on. He gave the origins and reasons for all of the other myths that the church co-opted in inventing their versions. It was the first time I ever heard a religious leader speak truth.

I don't think we use "Your Grace." I think he might be Right Reverend or Very Reverend or something like that.

Bishop Spong is one of many good Episcopalians. My husband loved his books, even thought my husband was a committed atheist.
